How common are fillings in teenagers & older children now?

DS (16) has just been told by the dentist he needs his first filling between lower molars. I'm devastated to say the least but it got my thinking: How common are dental fillings in teens now? When I was growing up most of my friends had teeth filled whilst I knew them at school age but I somehow lucked out. Would be interesting to see your responses below...

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I tried to press 1 but got 0 by mistake. DS18, meticulous with his teeth, 0 fillings. DS15, big sweets fan and for a long time refused to use an electric toothbrush - 1.

How did he find the filling? I'm worried it will be challenging to get DS to the appointment as he already gets nervous about checkups...

Ds1 had a couple of fillings in his baby teeth iirc. We didn't really allow sweets, but he had quite the orange juice and raisins habit. Dentist told us he saw more fillings caused by raisins than sweets in that age group. His adult teeth have been fine though. Ds2 (16) has had none.

Two here 22 and 26 taught both to floss and use electric toothbrushes from the get go. No fillings. Only clean the ones you want to keep etc.

My son had two at 11. Hypoplasticnmolars and we got caught by Covid and lack of dental care. I was devastated .

4 dc, aged between 24-15. Only the eldest has ever had one filling and that was in a baby tooth so long gone now.

They all had raisins and juice as little ones and have eaten their fair share of fizzy drinks chocolate and sweets over the years.

On the other hand, my mum was strict with sweet stuff and we rarely had juice and fizzy drink only on Christmas Day. I had a few fillings as a child and have had a couple of back teeth removed as an adult after failed root canal. As a child I remember being told I had weak enamel (Fischer sealant anyone??!) due to having had measles very young but not sure if that is correct as I asked a dentist a few years ago and they totally dismissed it!

By the time i was 18 I have about 6 fillings. My teens are 17 and 18, not a filling between them. I put it down to having no boiled sweets these days, and more sweeteners in drinks rather than sugar. That said my teens are not big on soft drinks.
