Platelets?

Does anyone know anything about a low platelet count? Basically my son who is 4 has autism, we went to rainbow house yesterday for blood tests which in our area is the hospital that deals with childhood disabilities. The blood tests were taken due to my son being very pale/ tired over the last few weeks and they added in genetic testing at the same time which is why it was this hospital originally for the test. Anyway that was 11am yesterday. 5:30pm yesterday I then got a phone call from the main hospital in our area who had said the lab had called them with my sons results and the doctor said he had severely low platelets and had to go in for another blood test. Took him up for it and came home, an hour later I got a call to say the test didn’t work and to take him in this morning for another test. We’ve just got home and said we’d be phoned with the results. I know absolutely nothing about platelets and Google isn’t much help, it’s just worrying me that we had to take him to hospital the same day of the result? My son is still very much fatigued all day, he bruises easily and just not been himself for a while. What could this be? I’ve been given no information at all apart from his platelet and red cell count being low.

Good sources of health information are the NHS and (from the US) WebMD and The Mayo Clinic, The Cleveland Clinic and I think Johns Hopkins gave us some good info recently on my dad’s condition (unrelated.)
I would double check these rather than rely on the AI or other articles.
Good luck OP, I hope it is not one of the serious causes.
I am guessing they haven’t given you more info as now they know platelet count is low they will need to do other tests to get to the bottom of why and what this means.

Hey, have you had any update on this?
my little girl bruises very easily so I often worry about her platelets
did they mention white cells?

Emmad010601 · 29/05/2026 15:21

yes his white cell count is also low. He’s had repeated blood tests and he’s now to get a bone marrow biopsy tomorrow. Still not been told what we are looking at but hopefully the bone marrow biopsy can give us some answers! X

Hey, did you get any results today? Hope he’s ok x

I hope you've had some more answers today. My daughter has low platelets due to ITP, but her other blood results are normal. You must be really worried, I'm so sorry. Keeping everything crossed you get a plan of action soon xx
