12 yo Period every 2 weeks, for how long?

Dd (12), has recently started her periods and she’s had one every 2 weeks since the first one. I know that this can be normal and that it can be a while before they settle down, but I feel really sorry for her as she’s only getting 10 day breaks between one finishing and the next one starting. As far as I can remember, mine were 28 days like clockwork from the start (until perimenopause hit, and now they’re all over the place!). Anyone else have experience of this and how long it took for cycles to get longer?

Aww my 11 year old has just been through somthing similar 😭

She started her period 4 months ago and they have been lasting for 10 days at a time, with maybe a 10 day gap in between. Took her to the GP and they have given her tranexamic acid

Edited to add: I left it for around 4 months as I was aware it takes time to settle, but by the 4th month I was getting concerned so took her to the GP

You need to take her to the doctor. At the very least, her iron levels need to be checked.

Thanks both, they aren’t long or heavy, no signs of anaemia and, other than some mild cramping, they aren’t painful. If it continues or she develops any of the above, I will take her to the GP, but it’s very early days I think.

My DD took two years to have anything resembling a regular cycle. Anything from 2-5 weeks in between. I would say your DD is still very new to periods and a doctor would tell you to wait longer and see if they sort themselves out as unfortunately it’s quite normal. Sympathies though - it’s tough for them

Thanks @Yujathat was my thinking too. The literature says 2-3 years but longer cycles seem to be more prevalent than short so hopefully won’t be that long! She’s trying period pants rather than pads now, so I’m hoping that helps make it a bit easier for her to manage as discomfort from pads and the movement of pads during the night are her main annoyances
