Ferritin Level

I requested blood tests for my DD11 because she has been having a lot of stomach aches, headaches and feeling tired. She gets worn out easily and also sometimes complains that her legs ache. She also has very thin hair and looks pale with dark circles under her eyes. I was thinking possible anaemia and GP agreed.

I have had results back from blood tests and everything is within normal range. Her ferritin is 23ug/L which is within range, but on the low side. Is it worth pursuing this with the GP? I have read that iron supplements are bad for the stomach and her stomach is very sensitive!

I wondered if anyone had any advice. GP has written 'no further action' on the report, but she still has these issues.

Thanks

I think Spatone is very gentle on the stomach. I think our “normal” ranges in the UK are too generous- 23 is low.

23 might technically be within normal range, but current NICE guidelines are to treat below 30 as iron deficiency. Given her symptoms, I wouldn’t want to ignore it.
But as well as that, I would hope your GP would want to actually find out the reason behind the low ferritin. It’s not enough just to give supplements.
