Do I just go to A&E at this point?

For background, querying whether dd has got hand foot and mouth, but now I'm not so sure. For context we are waiting a call back from 111, am awaiting a doc to call in the next six hours. She 1 and started with a temp around 2am last night. Hitting around the 38.5 Mark, since then it hasn't come down below 37.6 with meds on board. So I know that it is doing something. She started with this rash on her foot and its now spread to her entire body, she is also now drooling like mad and I'm presuming she has a sore throat cause she isn't eating, spits out fluid and cries if she swallows. She is somewhat herself, mainly not though. She is weeing, but she's only had two wet nappies since around 12pm. Shes only recently drifted off as she clearly is uncomfortable. Wondering whether we just let her sleep, or just take her to be seen.

If 111 don’t know the rash has spread everywhere and she is drooling and refusing fluid I would ring them back - in all honesty if my baby couldn’t take fluids I’d be in a&e regardless.

Hope she feels better soon.

You can go to A&E whilst waiting for the call back. If they tell you to go, you are already registered. It's concerning when they are unwell and tiny.

Octagonchecker · 03/04/2026 22:40

I would doubt that's HFM because the blisters are on places you don't usually get them with HFM. Both my kids have had an all over rash with it but on places like the torso it was more of a flat pink speckled viral rash. I don't think it looks like chicken pox either because the foot has that cluster.
I would consider A&E if you think she's getting dehydrated and isn't taking fluids.

I spoke to them just now, as I was awaiting a clinician call, I advised that she is drooling everywhere, I mean she soaked the corner of top being sat with me for ten minutes and had explained the rash had spread within 4 hours, from the patch on her foot, to all over. They have said its possibly chicken pox or hfm. They've said not to give her ibuprofen incase and to wait to either is confirmed before giving her anymore. Explained that she can only have two more doses of calpol between now and 3pm tomorrow, they advised if the fever is low grade, don't give it but I can see she is uncomfortable as well as having the temp. They said they'd prefer us to stay at home and manage symptoms incase it is a contagious rash and the doctor would call us in six hours. She is asleep, finally, after hours, bless her.

Hi Op,

my littles just recovered from hand foot and mouth. They luckily didn’t seem to get it to bad. But had it on their feet, hands, ankle, wrist bottom and a few strays on belly and inside mouth.

this rash does definitely resemble that. So I do think it’s hand foot and mouth. Maybe drooling due to having some in her mouth?

mine lucky didn’t get a temp, but it can cause a fever.

i think your doing the right thing contacting 111 especially if she’s showing signs of dehydration.

if you can tomorrow try getting some ice lollies for additional fluid. I do hope she’s feeling better soon

addwardrobe · 03/04/2026 22:42

I don’t think that rash looks great. Does it blanch under a glass? She may just have hand foot and mouth or she may have tonsilitis or something else. Temp
doesnt sound awful but the rash isn’t great. How long do you still have to wait for 111?

Cottoncandy358 · 03/04/2026 22:44

It does blanch, and she isn't overly bothered by it, isn't itching etc, have had a little poke around in her mouth and can't see any blisters etc. But she squealed when I offered her juice earlier, was attempting to get some fluid in her so assume that with the drooling there is some sort of sore throat.

I would warm slightly whatever fluids you're giving. When I have tonsillitis cold liquid is agony, warm liquid goes down easier.

Happytaytos · 03/04/2026 23:02

Bless her. I'd say hfm based on the rash my 3 had too.

If she's not uncomfortable with it, let the temp burn off the virus.

Horrible seeing them so ill😢

Cottoncandy358 · 03/04/2026 23:10

Thank you all! She is soundly asleep for the first time all day currently, so her dad will stay up to be on hand if needed, her temp is down atm but she's recently had calpol and I think thats helping her sleep too. She isn't too bothered, but she looks poorly and she looks wiped out. The whimper at wanting to watch the teletubbies but not feeling well enough to just watch it, I think if we get worse during the night we will definitely take her to be seen. I did query hand foot and mouth, and we have just come back from a week at the caravan which has hundreds if not more kids floating about so she could of easily picked something up.

Glad she's asleep. I would definately watch her, but honestly I think not taking her to A&E at the moment is right. I don't think they'd do much more than you are doing unless her temp gets sky high or she get dehydrated and needs a drip. I think you might just end up waiting for hours with her much less comfortable than at home to be told to keep doing what you are doing!

Get lots of ice lollies in, my son had hand foot and mouth last year and was covered, had quite a few in his mouth/throat wouldn’t eat or drink but would happily munch a lolly, helped to keep his fluids up, hope she feel better soon xx

Cottoncandy358 · 04/04/2026 12:33

Thank you all! Managed to get an ooh gp appointment at half 8 this morning. Confirmed hand foot and mouth. She could see the blisters in her mouth that we couldn't. Would explain the little desire to drink etc. Her temp has settled a bit and she did eat some wotists, a win is a win! Hopefully it clears soon.
