My poor DS has been coughing away at night for the last week and I’ve given him cough medicine but I never really find that they do anything. Any tips or things you swear by to help a cough?! TIA

Nothing that you can give a kid.
Does anyone in the family have an inhaler? We find they help bad coughs ‘get up’ especially in the night. But would depend on age.

Yes we do have an inhaler which I used to use when my DD was younger as she would get this quite a lot. He’s 5. Weirdly he said his ears hurt last night and then said it’s his cheek so I don’t know if he’s got some sort of virus. He’s had a bit of a sore eye too and his breath also has a strong whiff! We’re going away this weekend so I want to try to help him shift it before we go if possible.

We were advised Piriton syrup at a similar age. It's antihistamine so works if the cough is caused by an allergy but also dries up mucus so if the cough is caused by post nasal drip will help too. Raising the head of the bed a bit and keeping the air moist also help.

Use honey (if >1yr), warm drinks, humidifier, and slightly elevate head at night.
Clear mucus with saline spray; see a doctor if cough worsens or breathing is hard.
