DS11 Upset Tummy 2 weeks

As the title says, DS 11 tummy pain and diarrhoea for two weeks now. Doctor on Friday reassured himself it wasn't appendicitis and said just bowel infection not resolving itself. Wouldn't need to see him until after another FOUR weeks of this.
Isn't able to do his sport he does 5 times a week, bit teary and upset with it all.

Any advice?!

@Shambles123 did something happen to cause these issues? Like a bad bug? Or did it just start? Is there any history of gastro issues (coeliac / IBD) in the family?

Shambles123 · 23/03/2026 10:29

The first week was a bit more standard tummy bug and he seemed better but then it came back on him and just isn't letting up now. DH has IBD but has been in a better phase over recent years.

First week DH and DD1 also grumbling about tummy aches/the runs and all 3 got an itchy rash but DH and DD1 ok now.

Flush it out is the only practical steer really. Peppermint tea is genuinely useful in bowel and stomach issues, not just an old wives tale. So pints of that.

Thank you! Ok, will get some peppermint tea in for him.

DD12 has had similar. GP did a stool sample and it showed that she has a stomach infection called H. pylori. Approx 40% of people have it, but comparatively few present with symptoms. It requires treatment, so I would push for further testing.

I would be keen for the GP to do stool tests to look for bugs (bacteria, virus and parasites). Did the family do anything unusual just before getting sick - farm visit, open water swimming, trip abroad?

Stomach upset that won't resolve plus rash can mean Giardia parasite infection. My ex boyfriend caught it from a river in England (he liked rowing and the river was well known for causing various nasty infections). He lost 10% of his body weight in two weeks and it only improved with treatment.

Thanks both
I have read about Giardia online but no swimming other than the pool he swims in every week.
GP suggesting stool testing but in four weeks time if not resolved.
Rash came and went quite quickly, was on the sore area (appendicitis quadrant!)

Does your Gp know your DH has IBD or maybe needs reminding.
Having a daughter diagnosed with Crohn’s disease 8 years ago and having learnt a lot about IBD I would be expecting the GP to take that into account.
Our GP dismissed my concerns that something wasn’t right for over a year. Turns out it was Crohn’s disease.
