Rash days after chicken pox

Hi all,

My 4 year old has had chicken pox this week, its his second time as he had it as a baby. It started about 6 days ago and they are now scabbing over although not all have.
He's had a bath tonight and he now has a huge rash down his side which must have appeared today. He hasn't been itchy today really so I haven't needed to put and gel/lotion on so have only just noticed it.
He doesn't seem ill or upset by it but I'm worried about it. It doesn't look like more chicken pox (although maybe it is?) and it shouldn't be by now. Has anyone else's children had this?

I have attached a picture.

Thankyou

Google scarlet fever rash. Having chicken pox increases the risk of then catching scarlet fever (the Strep bacteria gets into the skin via the blisters).

If you think it's scarlet fever, you should see the GP tomorrow.

Poor DC! Has it settled down now after the heat of the bath? And is he otherwise well? Obviously keep an eye on it, but I wouldn’t worry.

My DS had chickenpox at 7 months. He has always been super susceptible to rashes and has been diagnosed with rosella, scarlet fever x2, dishydrotic eczema, shingles, and countless viral rashes. He would show signs of rashes alongside many other illnesses and was prone to high and sustained fevers too.

He has now mostly outgrown this but we had a lot of worry when he was younger! (Esp since I lost a relative to meningitis as a young child and always felt hyper vigilant about it).

ETA: great advice from @OtterMummy2024 - scarlet fever rash feels a bit sandpapery and I believe usually starts on the torso.

Yeah great advice here from @OtterMummy2024 I'd be taking a look at scarlets fever rash and if concerned call the GP in the morning. Could be a viral rash but have a look on the NHS website as difficult to tell from the photo. Hope your little one is feeling better soon x

It is rough and it hadn't calmed down at all.

He had scarlet fever as a baby too but I can't really remember it too well as he was ill a lot that winter, he also does get a lot of rashes.

I'm going to get him in the GPs tommorow to check. Thankyou

How’s your DC doing @Lovebug06 ?

Lovebug06 · 26/01/2026 12:07

Hey,

I took her to the gp and they thought shingles but weren't sure, I got told to take her to the hospital to be checked. They said more chicken pox but they're definitely not. They also took swabs and have refered her to skin specialists. I'm not sure if it's shingles.
It's still there and sore though.
