Chicken pox ( when will they stop coming out)

Hi all looking for some advice.
My daughter has just got over chicken pox about two weeks ago. My 7 year old son now has it we first noticed spots Thursday upon waking and now we are on day 3 soon to be 4 and he is covered! His face and lips have fluid filled blisters every where some of the CP are quite big on his torso and widespread front and back and we have noticed tonight it’s also spreading to arms, legs, ears and under eyes.

I’m just looking for some advice on when I can expect the spots to stop coming out my daughters seemed to stop after day 3 and started to scab but I can just see more and more coming up for him.

He is drinking plenty and has been eating fine up until this evening but he just looks exhausted and is totally fed up! ( I don’t blame him I would be as well)

We are using piriton, oat baths/head and shoulders shampoo, calamine, virasoothe, poxclin and paracetamol you name it we have it.
I just feel so sorry for him and want to say when they will stop coming out as he keeps asking 😩

Day 5 was the worst for us, they started popping really quickly after that and were all scabbed over by day 10. DD had it really bad but the best thing I found that helped was bicarb in the bath, it helped them dry up loads quicker. Hope he's over it soon it's so miserable!

Has he had any other illness before getting chicken pox? Only reason I ask I had a friends who boy had another virus close together with chicken pox and it almost over whelmed his body and caused more spots than average child and needed some treatment. If he’s starts to get too many spots it might be worth a photo to the GP Monday just to sense check they are happy with the level etc

@Hotchocolateandmarsh thanks for your reply he is never ill so I think this is really getting him down I can’t actually remember the last time he has looked this poorly.
its horrible my daughter seemed to get over it pretty quick although she was quite covered as well he just seems to have loads of big ones and more wide spread and his face is really getting him down. Most people say the second child gets it worse than the first

@pennepicanto we made it to two weeks without him getting it and then the first spot came out!
it’s awful for them think maybe it’s a little worse as he’s that bit older my daughter is only 3 so I don’t think she really new what was going on.
praying in the next couple of days it starts to ease for him. Thanks for the heads up with the bicarb I will try it!

@Anne19191the same happened to us only my eldest got it first, thought we were in the clear with the youngest then just over 2 weeks later hers started. Eldest was definitely worse though they were in her mouth and ears too it was really awful.

@pennepicanto I’ve finally got him to sleep hoping he gets a couple of hours. I’m praying he’s not more covered by the morning. Although I think it’s highly likely.

Yes that’s what’s bothering him the most his lips and I’ve noticed he does have a couple in his mouth and he’s started to say his eyes hurt and they are very watery.

Think I will just keep an eye and maybe take to GP/ Out of hours if it’s gets really bad tomorrow it’s horrible as a parent because if I could take it away and have it for him I would and there is no medicine you can give to get rid of it.

I did say if he didn’t get it after 3 weeks of my little one having it I was going to get him the vaccine although he said he would rather have the CP than an injection 🤣

Hi, Did they stop coming out now?

My son has just had a very bad case, even on day 8 new ones were still coming out. Ended up in hospital on anti virals and iv antibiotics.

Anne19191 · 12/04/2026 22:21

@Gollygoose sorry I have only just seen this message very very late reply.

They did not stop coming out we ended up on strong antibiotics for two weeks as the spots got infected and would not stop popping up he was just covered. He was also off school for 3 weeks 🤦🏻‍♀️

He is also quite badly scarred on back and face but I have been reassured with time this will fade. I hope your son is ok and he eventually got over his bad case of CP.

@Anne19191 sorry to hear he got it bad like my son! My son is also scarred literally everywhere. His skin looks like leopard print! Just covered in brown circles. Kids at school were shocked to see him like that after the Xmas holidays but I think they are used to it now. People on here say they will fade so i'm holding on to that!
