Does anyone have any thoughts on whether this is a (or start of a) cold sore? Two year old not complaining of any pain but I’m very concerned about what this could be.TIA

Do you mean the smooth patch on upper lip, or the red spot on toddler’s chin ?

Itr112 · 10/01/2026 19:15

I was thinking the upper lip originally, but also the red spot on chin

It looks like cold sores. They can be itchy. The chemist can supply some cream for that. I would take him to the chemist

I suffer from cold sores and neither look like the start of one to me. Has your child recently been exposed to the virus? If not then it's incredibly unlikely

We saw someone over Christmas who had one but they didn’t interact, and this is over two weeks ago so I thought it might be unlikely. I was unsure whether this is the start of it?

If there was no interaction it's unlikely but getting them myself and having small children I know the anxiety around any mouth blemish!

No, it looks more like they've got chapped lips from the cold weather (or have they had a cold and been breathing through their mouth a lot lately) and have bitten the chapped skin off, hence the smooth patch. The spot on the chin is nothing.

Has it changed in the last hour? I would expect a cold sore to have changed this early on.

She’s asleep now but I will check first thing and report back - thank you

This is how it looks this morning - excuse the yogurt on the far right!

Looks like dry skin to me. A cold sore would definitely have been very obvious by morning if it was one

As someone who grew up with terrible cold sores (touch wood, I haven’t had one as an adult for years) it doesn’t look like one to me.
