My 8 year old son has had this for over a year now.
we went to see a specialist and they said it should grow out, probably just trauma. They advised us to return if this didn’t go away after 3 months.
I went to my gp and he said just forget about it likely just trauma but couldn’t really explain why it wasn’t going away.
i have really been trying not to be keeping an eye on it but last night couldn’t help but notice.
i just don’t understand why it’s not healing if trauma and what i should do next.
any thoughts or advice would be welcome please.
thank you

Just this line on my son’s toe. We thought it might have occurred after a rocking horse went over it with someone on it but that was 18 months ago. I was told it should grow out.
he doesn’t play sports so no idea why it’s not healing (no reason for it to recur or persist).

It looks like a splinter, but obviously if it was someone would've removed it by now....

VerityBlueSky · 03/01/2026 10:37

It doesn't go all the way down to the cuticle. So looks like it's started midnail from a knock or it is a splinter from the tip of the toe. Have you pulled the bit of brown bit that's sticking out from under the nail with tweezers to see if it moves?

Icksville · 03/01/2026 18:05

Hi @VerityBlueSky yes I pulled it gently with tweezers and it just came away like a bit of skin.
what I can’t understand is that if it is a knock from the middle why it fades and then comes back a dark colour again over the span of the 18 months.
also I feel like I can see it almost tracking up to the cuticle albeit in a diffuse way.
