Is this temperature too low??

My 4 year old son has been unwell with a virus for almost a week. Very high fever lasting 5 days, highest 41.5 which required a hospital visit. He seemed a little better in himself yesterday, drinking more, less sleepy but not eating (barely had anything since Sunday). He does keep crying with tummy pain (hospital aware, said it could be the glands in his tummy) He woke up crying a couple of hours ago, tummy pain again and I’ve been monitoring his temperature since and it’s currently 35.2, is this a normal temperature or should I be concerned? In two minds whether to call 111, but don’t want to waste their time if I’m just being over anxious x

No that’s not normal, call 111.

HeartyViper · 05/12/2025 04:26

Agree, 111.

ThatIsABigSon · 05/12/2025 04:28

That's very low. Seek medical help

I’ve put an extra blanket on his bed, temperature is increasing was 35.9 a few minutes ago. Just calling 111

I'd take him to A&E

Anything below 36 is worrying imo, especially after recently having an infection, I’d be worrying about sepsis. Glad you’ve called 111, they’ll be telling you to take him to hospital. Are his hands and feet cold? Any mottled rash?

Trintrintress · 05/12/2025 05:03

111 have said a GP will call me back (within 6 hours)
His temperature is now 36.5

Feet and hands are warm. He feels much warmer and no mottled rash as far as I can see.

His temp sounds much better ! My kids temps can go down to that when sleeping.

Thank you all for responding. I just want him to feel better, poor little love

My son always has a low temperature after a high fever breaks. It used to freak me out too but now I know it's his norm, when the temp breaks he will go into a cold sweat and his temp will read in the mid 35's, for some children this can be normal after a fever, it's more about how he's acting and other symptoms - so the fact that he was appearing better within himself and less tired with the low temp is a good sign that it's not anything dangerous causing it.

otherlineeyes · 05/12/2025 10:43

This happened to one of my kids when he was about 2 a couple of times. It was like his body temp over corrected and he went cold.
the first time I called 111 and the sent an ambulance, he soon returned to normal temp but we had to wait in the hospital for ages for him to do a wee as the wanted a sample.
This was a while ago when nhs worked and was efficient- no waiting to be seen.
sharing to offer some reassurance that it is a thing, worth taking medical advice but can be nothing to worry about.

Still no call back from 111. Fortunately he was referred to the hospital at home team when he was discharged from A&E on Wednesday, they open at 8.30am and I spoke to one of the lovely nurses this morning, she is going to due out to check him over shortly.

How is he doing Op? 💐

Trintrintress · 07/12/2025 15:47

He is a little better, temperature much improved. A final hurrah yesterday when he vomited, just as the nurse called to check on him again (great timing my boy!) he’s still complaining of intermittent tummy pain, but told this could last a few days. He’s barely eating but they aren’t too worried as long as he is drinking. He’s just so fatigued now and very emotional, poor little love. This virus is brutal!
