What bugs are going round at the minute?

My 4yr old was sent home from school on Friday with a temp and she’s been ill all weekend, complaining of a headache, high temperature, no appetite, been sick once so far, just really off it and not herself. She perks right up with ibuprofen and is almost back to normal but without it I don’t think I’ve ever seen her this poorly. I don’t want to rush off to urgent care if this is just a run of the mill bug that’s going round at the minute? But also don’t want to leave it if she needs to be seen. I have health anxiety so I tend to overreact. Has anyone else experienced a bug like this recently? I know a lot of her friends in her class has been off unwell in the last couple of weeks but I don’t know what with.

Loads unfortunately. Bit of norovirus and hand foot and mouth (enterovirus) too https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/national-flu-and-covid-19-surveillance-reports-2025-to-2026-season/national-flu-and-covid-19-surveillance-report-20-november-2025-week-4
My toddler and partner have had the WORST cough and flu-like symptoms, toddler has HFm blisters so we are assuming it's that

FWIW I took the toddler to the GP on the fourth day to get him to listen to DC's chest & say it was ok to keep giving ibuprofen and paracetamol. GP said viral and keeping looking after at home. Could you go to the GP tomorrow or see Out of hours today if worried?

COVID
Flu
Other viruses

It seems a really bad year for them all.

It sounds like your little one has some sort of virus. If she seems pretty OK with ibuprofen I wouldn't be worrying. Just keep an eye on her to see if she gets worse. Keep the fluids up.

There's quite a lot of flu around too. Sounds like you're doing the right things, managing fever and keeping her hydrated. Hope DD feels better soon

Sunshineclouds11 · 23/11/2025 14:50

We've had a bad weekend also with DD, same symptoms apart from no sickness.
we're riding it out with Calpol and ibuprofen also.

seems like a bad cold

Half of DS’s class were off at one point or another last week with the same symptoms, and DS’s come down with it this weekend so won’t be in school tomorrow. A few have been taken to the Dr and in at least one of the cases they were told most likely flu, so I’m presuming that’s what it could be. I haven’t seen DS this poorly since he was a baby and ended up in hospital with pneumonia, it’s brutal.

Thank you all for your replies. Seems like a lot is going around at the minute.

I hope you’re little ones are feeling better soon @OtterMummy2024 @Sunshineclouds11 @Justcallmedaffodil it’s awful isn’t it when they’re off colour.

I rang 111 earlier because she took a bit of a turn so they saw us at out of hours and turns out she has a pretty bad case of tonsillitis. It’s her 3rd bout this year so I think she’s prone to it unfortunately. The Dr was brilliant in reassuring me that if it was an adult that had it they wouldn’t be leaving the house, he said if he had it he would be constantly laid down 😂

Prescribed 10 days of antibiotics, Calpol, lots of cuddles and ice lollies to keep the fluids up x

Glad they saw you today and that you have something to give your daughter - hopefully she'll feel better soon. Tonsillitis is awful!

Slapped cheek and croup doing the rounds in our nursery. Both my kids have high temps and bad coughs just now
