Chickenpox spots in weird places?

My DD (9mo) is recovering from what we have assumed was chicken pox. Noticed some spotty rash last week (Friday) but thought it was just some skin irritation and didn’t actually realise it was chicken pox until it started to blister and scab. It’s been mild, probably 20 or so spots over arm and chest mostly, one on her chin. Mild fever for a day or two.
this morning my DS (3) has woken up with a scabby spotty rash around his mouth and on the backs of his knees. Sounds obvious that it is also chickenpox, but the funny thing is these are areas he tends to get excema, and so he has an ongoing rash in those areas already on and off. Does anyone have experience of this, chickenpox spots only appearing in already sensitive areas? Thanks!

Are you sure it’s not HFM?

My nursery sent round a Hand Foot and Mouth alert this morning (several cases confirmed by the GP). Could be that.

No we aren’t sure, it obviously could be but seems a coincidence that my DS would get HFM a week after my DD had chickenpox. But not impossible obviously! Also they’ve both been at home all week for half term, so it’s less obvious where he could have caught HFM as I believe the incubation time for that is quite short…

my main query is why the spots (whether HFM or CP) have only appeared in areas where he has eczema already. Seems weird!

Yes we’ve had HFM and CP alerts from nursery in the past couple of weeks! Really just want a diagnosis so we know how to proceed with how contagious he is etc!

Get the GP to send off a swab, it's the only way to be sure (and then you know whether to get a chicken pox catch up vaccine dose...)

Was it definitely CP that your DD had and not HFM?

Mine had spots all over but more so in the areas his skin was irritated (nappy rash, a couple of patches of eczema). You’ll know for sure in a day or two if the spots are following the classic chicken pox pattern- I wouldn’t bother GP unless unwell as it won’t change what you do over the next few days if it’s HFM or chickenpox.
