My 12 year old had a cyst removed on Monday. Surgeon said it would be day surgery and back at school on Wednesday. He ended up on iv painkillers on tuesday lunchtime and he is still quite swollen and in pain today. Is this no or is something wrong?

Where was the cyst?
How big was it?
If surgeon said they expected him back to school next day, then it’s a bit unusual.
I’d expect swelling for a few days, and it will be tender, but it’s usually sutures out in a week and no follow up needed.
How does your DC deal with pain in general from a fall off a bike or whatever? Are they quite sensitive, or would they usually brush it off and just get back on their bike?

I’ve had 3 cyst removal surgeries in the last year as the same cyst keeps growing back and the wound keeps getting infected. It’s normal to be sore but if you’re concerned then see someone as it may be infected. Maybe worth a call to 111, or send a message and photo to your GP surgery.

Thank you. Cyst was in his gum, not sure what size but it was only discovered when it showed up on a routine dental x ray so i would think it was small. The wound looks ok, he is just swollen. Today is the first day he hasn't needed any painkillers, although he says it hurts if he moves his neck too fast. He doesn't normally make a fuss about pain.

Mine was on my chest and needed Stiches. Sore for a week or so afterwards. When it became very red, angry looking and swollen I saw the nurse and got antibiotics for it being infected. Worth getting it checked if you’re concerned. I hope he feels better soon.
