8 week old vomiting/spitting up constantly

Hiya,

My 8 week old (3 weeks corrected) is exclusively breastfed and spits up or vomits her feeds all day every day, maybe 40 times a day. GP says it's reflux (not concerned about Pyloric stenosis as it's not projectile) and prescribed Omeprazole. Weight is ok ish, but I have to feed her loads to make up for the amount she spits up to keep weight gain steady. We saw consultant and he said to come off the omeprazole as we saw no improvement and she doesn't seem in pain with the acid, just brings up milk without much fuss so omeprazole isn't the right route anyway.

I'm trying everything I can to keep her upright, burp her etc but it's not sustainable as she is third baby and I have to put her down at some point and when I do she instantly vomits. Everything is covered in sick, I'm concerned about how little she's keeping in her and just wondering if anyone has any experiences similar?

Thanks!

What did the consultant suggest otherwise as what you are describing sounds like classic silent reflux? Were you increasing the omeprazole dose in line with weight gain?

I thought silent reflux was when they didn't spit up but were in pain?

consultant said I should just do all the things like 'keep upright, burping, smaller feeds etc' and then wait for our dietitian referral and we might be prescribed a thickener for my milk or gaviscon.

i also want to add that I've cut out dairy for the last 2-3 weeks too to see if it was that bit doesn't seem to make a difference at the moment

My youngest was like this. He was full term but a low birthweight baby due to uterine growth restriction. I couldn’t understand how he kept gaining weight with the amount of vomit. For nearly a year the washing machine was on constantly and we had emergency muslins everywhere. My mum made me a couple of feeding ponchos out of old bath towels- I’d literally stick my head through the hole in the middle of the towel and hold him while wearing it. We had waterproof matting on the floor. He wore bibs or scarves constantly and I was changing them hourly to stop his neck getting chapped. Other than the constant vomit he was a very happy baby!
We tried everything and nothing worked. I was a size 18 starting breastfeeding and a size 10 finishing it because I think I just had to keep producing so much! Ds went from not being big enough for the growth chart to 90th centile in 9 months. He grew, I shrunk. He’s now 15 and 5’11”!
One day it just… stopped. I can remember looking at a pile of unused muslins on the arm of the sofa and wondering who’d restocked them- then realising I hadn’t needed them. It was like a switch flipped.

I don’t want to sugarcoat it. It wasn’t fun. I travelled to people’s houses with my own plastic matting and a poncho made from a bath towel. However DS seems unaffected and it’s amazing when it stops!
