EBF 3mo suddenly getting on/off diarrhoea

I’m a first time mum exclusively breastfeeding my 3mo baby boy and his poos have always been normal, once a day. However recently they’ve been a lot more irregular, going a few times a day and sometimes it’s diarrhoea. I was concerned last week so took him to the GP as I had drunk a TRIP drink with magnesium and lion’s mane in it thinking it was that. She was not concerned. However I am still worried! I have a very healthy diet, with lots of eggs, green juices and avocado, but nothing has changed since he was born.

has anyone else experienced this? I am so stressed 😩

I think that around seven weeks, my baby's bowel movements changed (used to go after every feed, changed to going once a day/every other or even third day, and more likely to be a blowout). I was combination feeding, but mostly breastfeeding.

Could be the maturation of your baby's digestive system, it could also be a tummy bug. Also has your baby just had a second dose of the rotavirus vaccine? Because that really upset my baby's stomach at both doses.

Generally if your baby isn't vomiting, feverish, distressed and is feeding well, the GP doesn't do anything for diarrhoea - for a breastfed baby, they just say feed on demand and they will get their hydration back that way. However if it doesn't resolve they might send a sample for testing for common viruses and food poisoning bacteria, mainly to rule out any need for antibiotics.

However you know your baby best, go back to the GP/111 etc if you think there's a problem.
