10 week old with cold - what to do?

We’ve had an awful cold spread round the household, It’s either from my 3 year old going back to pre school or from the change in weather. My 10 week old has unfortunately caught it and is very snotty/ stuffy, can’t breathe through her nose so is mouth breathing. At what point do you go doctors or A&E when a baby has a cold?
She’s still eating, no fever just very bunged up. Not sure what to do, can I have some advice please.

She is my second child, my first did get bronchitis at the same age but the symptoms were a lot more severe and he ended up needing oxygen.

I think I might be a little bit paranoid from when my son got ill thinking she might end up the same way, but not sure if a baby getting a cold is something that does need to be checked before it gets worse. Thanks x

Can you raise the end of the cot mattress up by putting a pillow underneath it? Also some vicks or olbas oil on a hanky underneath or near the cot??

Biosblbay · 20/09/2025 12:19

@shellyleppard yes luckily the next to my crib can tilt. We also have the olbas oil and the calpol plug in! Would that all be safe to use for her age as it says not recommended for under 3 months. She is only 2 weeks off being 3 months though

If she has no fever and eating all you can do is keep her comfortable and let it take its course. A&e will just expose her to more germs

InMyHealthyEra · 20/09/2025 12:19

Calpol, make sure to get the 2+ months one and not the 3+ months

Vapour rub to put on babies chest.

Unless baby is visibly struggling to breathe, sucking in ribs or has an uncontrollable fever, I wouldn’t worry.

shellyleppard · 20/09/2025 12:22

@Biosblbay could you put them in the hallway or the other side of the room away from the cot? Its not easy watching them struggle

BigBirdOfPrey · 20/09/2025 12:23

I used a nose sucker and saline spray
it was a game changer

This is what I did with my second. I would be careful with olbas oil and Vicks. I think you can use Snuffle Babe chest rub at that age though.

Also it's not advised to raise the head of a cot as it can put baby in an unsafe sleeping position (more chin to chest), so be careful x

Biosblbay · 20/09/2025 12:27

@HumberBridge2@BigBirdOfPrey Luckily I have both these things :) I’ll stick to doing this for now x

Similar in our house with number 2 - no need to do anything unless they are in distress / sucking in under ribs, dehydrated or have a temperature. Otherwise just feed and cuddles
