Help! What is this on baby’s scalp ??

Please talk me down or give honest opinions. Noticed this pink slightly raised bump about week ago. It’s like a bald patch on 4 month old baby’s scalp, becoming more noticeable . He has vaccines tomorrow so I’ll ask the nurse but I’m starting to really freak out. Do I need to take him hospital or anything ? He seems ok in himself , maybe a little grizzly but nothing too alarming.

Is it a birth mark? Dd had a couple, they were very pale when she was but but got redder as she got older.

No need to go to hospital I’m sure. Is it at all dry/scaly? Hard to tell from the pic - could just be the light

Thnk you for your replies. Not dry or scaly … a little bumpy but definitely pinky round bald spot. Wasn’t there before and seems to becoming a lot more noticeable after last couple days. Think getting bigger. Will post some other photos from 2 days ago, becoming a lot pinker.

Looks like a typical fungal infection. Get the pharmacist to have a look.

They’re really common. My son had patches on his legs. Skinny little thing too, so not in rolls or anything.

You’ll be showing it to the vaccination nurse today, won’t you - although they may say it needs a separate GP appointment of course…

Just an update for anyone who comes across this in the future. Tried fungal cream and it didn’t work. So tried a week of hydrocortisone which did improve it a bit but since stopping it’s just come back and no sign of hair growth. Have been referred to dermatologist by GP as they didn’t know what it was. Still worried.

Hi @Walkacrossthesand yes we did, but they had a Quick Look and said not sure! Said not eczema or fungal, just a dry patch but did not explain hair loss. We are meant to be seeing them again soon and theres been no improvement. My sister has scleroderma and so I’m going to mention that next time.

It doesn’t look like it’s enlarged at all, does it?

@Walkacrossthesand no you’re right it hasn’t got much bigger just not improved either. I put emollient on every day which seems to stop it looking inflamed. Very strange and frustrating to not have an answer.

Just an update if anyone comes across this thread in the future. It was finally confirmed to be a birth mark - sebaceous nevus. The hair will never grow there. There is nothing they can do but once they reach puberty they can sometimes change to become lumpy and need monitoring as sometimes can turn dodgy 😢. I will look into laser treatment for him for when he is older so am already putting money aside.

I have randomly come across your thread and thought I would comment as someone who had this, sorry it's a bit long.

I had two and was told mine was just a birth mark by my mum who didn't know. When I was in my early twenties it turned funny was sore, weeping and bleeding and a bit of one was taken off. They are deep in the scalp too. They should have taken the rest of it and the other one but there was a mix up at the hospital and I wasn't told. Fast forward to about 3 years ago in my early thirties one began to grow again, weep, bleed and and the other one became very sore. I also had a cyst grow on one. I had another small op where they were cut out and thankfully not cancerous. I had some scarring and of course no hair growth here but thought that was it. Then I was told they needed to make sure a few centimetres of my scalp that had been around them needed to be taken to ensure no cells are left as they can grow again and so I had that done a year ago. I would say that was the worst of the three.
I had no idea what this was and thought my birthmarks were just strange looking when I was growing up, mine were a lot more raised than your little ones though.
As you know about them, you can seek treatment when he gets older for it, and if you can get it taken off I really would just to take the risk away. And jsut the hassle of it all, like I say mine wasn't cancerous but I've had 3 small ops due to problems with them as an adult.
I really wish I had known about it earlier but I'm still fine and he will be too x

I'm 50 - here is mine. It has never caused any bother. It's under the hair, no one notices it except the hairdresser.

Thank you so much for letting me know. I’m sorry you’ve had so much stress with them. The dermatologist told us there was nothing could do and just to keep an eye on it as he gets older. Would we need to go private then? I read about the option of having it removed surgically and it can cause huge scarring. Laser sounds much kinder if that’s an option for him.

@FigAboutTheRules thank you for sharing. Have you been told yours is the same type of birthmark or is it a mole? Good that it’s not caused you any bother
