Normal chickenpox

Is this normal for chickenpox??
My son came down with chickenpox 4 days ago. The first 2 days wasn’t very unwell just a bit tired and spotty and hot during the night. The last 2 days he has been very tired with a high temperature and his spots look very red (see pic attached). Is this just a bad case or should I get him checked by the dr?

That looks quite bad and possibly infected OP. I’d ring out of hours Dr.

Gunpowder · 19/07/2025 22:26

Oh poor lamb. I’d call 111 and see if you can see someone out of hours too. My four children have all had chicken pox, and while two of them were as spotty as that, the spots weren’t as angry looking.

Springadorable · 19/07/2025 22:33

He needs to be seen, these look infected and he might need IV antibiotics.

slosd · 19/07/2025 22:41

Please contact out of hours dr’s as this looks like it could be infected. Tell them you suspect a skin infection and be prepared to send them those pictures.

My child needed strong antibiotics and narrowly avoided hospitalisation when their CP became infected.

My son has more spots than this, but they were like the small ones - none looked like the big angry ones. I'd be seeking out of hours asap for those, good luck.

Ok thanks for your replies he is the first of my children to get chickenpox so I am not sure what is normal. He is fast asleep (well, having fever dreams and talking in his sleep), so I will call out of hours first thing tomorrow if they still look this red. His older sister has also come down with them, she isn’t as spotty but is quite unwell, stomach ache, aches and pains and a very hot to touch.

If he got new fevers after the rash came up it couid be a secondary bacterial infection so if they aren't settling today please get him checked out. Hope all OK

Rustyee · 20/07/2025 10:31

He is definitely more poorly today than when the rash first appeared. I called 111 early this morning but I am still waiting for a call back from the DR. He has a fever and has had some chills. He has slept all morning but woke a couple of times like he is still in a fever dream walking around the house confused and not making much sense and when he is asleep he is constantly babbling. Should this be a cause for concern or is just part of the fever?

Please go to the ED. Chills do you mean digits and shivering? That's a concerning feature for a bacterial infection

Plibble · 20/07/2025 13:45

I think he needs to be seen, especially if he seems disoriented. I’d go to the nearest walk in clinic or pads A&E, though if you can take a second adult to stay outside with him while you let staff know you are bringing him in that would be good (so they can make space for him to be isolated given he will be infectious).

Gunpowder · 20/07/2025 22:10

How is he doing now? I would take him to be seen this evening if you haven’t already.

Springadorable · 20/07/2025 23:00

@Rustyee really hoping you've listened to all the advice and taken him in urgently.

Plibble · 21/07/2025 07:16

How is he today OP?

Rustyee · 21/07/2025 08:20

Hello, yes I took him to the out of hours yesterday, the pox aren’t infected he just has a nasty case of chicken pox. He is feeling a bit better today, he just has loads of spots on his neck which make it hard to move. Now he sister is really poorly with it, not many spots but very high temperature and bad stomach ache and vomiting, poor thing!

Glad he's ok. It's a horrible infection and the vaccine can't come soon enough
