Toddler facial scarring

Hi.

I have a 2 year old who was playing at a friends house, and fell into the corner of her metal table which was at a funny angle.

it was a deep cut. I went to a&e and they glued it and it’s an ok job but as it was so deep it’s left a bright red indented line in his eyebrow.

I feel so awful about it. I saw the hazard and was about to ask my friend to move the table and next thing I know it has happened.

Whilst I know these things happen at the moment it’s really quite visible and I’m so worried about how it might impact his life.

if it was less deep I’d probably be much less worried, I do wish it had had stitches as I think the end result would have been more subtle.

I did meet with a plastic surgeon to discuss but as it’s only just happened he said it’s very much a case of watch and wait. He felt they did a good job with the glue so here’s hoping

I’d be very surprised if it scars
i thought the same re my daughter
and it is now…. Invisible

Lactofull · 13/07/2025 15:02

The fact they glued rather than stitched up means it really wasn’t so very serious as to scar

pikkumyy77 · 13/07/2025 15:03

Please try to relax and feel ok. They really do heal up. And if not they can do wonders with plastic surgery later.

Thanks so much. Went to see a plastic surgeon on Friday actually about scar revision as a back up and he was totally non perplexed about it. Said if it didn’t heal quite right it’s a small and easy fix. I should feel calm now but I’m still fretting

Even if he does end up with a very faded scar on his eyebrow (as that’s all it would be), it will have absolutely no impact on his life whatsoever. Even if he becomes a male model, they would just put a dab of concealer and makeup there, if that.

They always glue young kids now to avoid general anesthetic, so technically you get a better finish with stitches but more of an ordeal for the kid who can’t eat for 8 hours and has to go under a general anaesthetic

Haha my friend reckons our quirks make us and he might end up more likely getting noticed just because of his cool eyebrow scar so she has a similar line of thinking

I have a scar on my eyebrow line (the hair doesn't grow so my eyebrows are not the same on both sides) which I've had since I was 5. Never impacted my life. Husband has one to the side of his eye from an accident when he was 3 - also never impacted his life. It would only have an impact if he had slashed his face open and had to have stitches right across leaving a potentially disfiguring scar. Please don't worry.

Was it deep too? That’s reassuring to know. It’s a little indented that’s what I’m mostly worried about but young skin is so clever. My friends son literally split his whole forehead open on a metal gate and now you’d have to really look to notice it

I sliced my face open on barbed wire as a kid, right across my cheek. It got stitched up by local GP and that was that. There's always been a faint scar there but nothing so noticeable that anyone has ever even asked me about it. Ds fell as a kid and had to have a cut on his forehead glued together, he is 18 now and there is a slight indent that's all.

If there is any kind of mark left it will be so faint that it won't be worth talking about.

dontcomeatme · 13/07/2025 15:11

I have a slight scar on my eyebrow from when I was child, and I split my chin twice, and I have a scar on me cheek, and my tooth went through my top lip and left a small scar. They're all absolutely tiny now I'm an adult and have never impacted my life in any way.

SleepingisanArt · 13/07/2025 15:12

OP you don't have a general anaesthetic to stitch a small wound! I had surgery on my hand recently which resulted in 8 stitches and I had a local anaesthetic and chatted with the staff all the way through....

Thanks so much, was on a metal corner so was a deep gash is what worries me. But hopefully will fade and as you say it’s just in his eyebrow so not right across his whole face. Even if it was right across his face there are some cool people rocking facial scars I suppose.

I just worry as kids can be mean is all

You do if you’re 2 years old though as you need to keep still!

Thanks - a few friends have said the same. Just a normal right of passage. I have two older ones who have never had significant injuries so it was a bit of a shock I think

Thanks - it’s so common really isn’t it. I always think I don’t see anyone with scars but I suppose it’s because they fade and you don’t notice anyway. Sure there’s plenty of people around with facial scars

Kids can be mean—but they are also very accepting of each other. This scar is likely to be nothing but his friends will ,at any rate, simply accept it as part of him. Or nickname him harry potter!

Maxorias · 13/07/2025 15:18

My DS2 is a bit of a kamikaze and smashed his brow against a table, you can't see it now. He also needed two stitches after banging his head, but the scar is very white now (two years on, he's 5 now), and you mostly notice it if his hair is cut very short.

Ironically, he got lightly scratched by a classmate and THAT left a scar even though it was very minor and hardly bled at all. I jokingly call him "Scarface". I'm not worried at all, the scar will fade, and even if it doesn't, scars tend to be "cool" rather than bullying material (unless they actually leave the person disfigured).

I have a scar on my brow (fell from my push chair). It's noticeable if you know it's there but most people won't see it until I point it out. Hasn't affected my life at all.

Haha my older kids can’t understand why I’m worried and my big boy who is 8 thinks it’s super cool, so maybe it’ll be his trademark.

thanks so much x x

My DD cut her head open when she was 6 and had it glued at A&E. She's 13 now and has a diagonal scar through her eyebrow. The hair just wont grow and it looks like she's shaved a line through it. Luckily her eyebrows are fair so it doesn’t show up too much. She will probably just fill in in with an eyebrow pencil or get it microbladed in the future.

I've got a scar through my eyebrow. It means there's a bit with no hair and I don't think there's much that can be done about that. No one has ever commented on it, so I assume it isn't noticeable.

SpacedOutOut · 13/07/2025 15:20

My DS sliced his bottom lip open (vertical line) when he was 4 or 5. They gave us strips to stick it shut as he wouldn’t sit still for the docs. Told us to take him home, wait for him to sleep, then stick the slit shut. He still thrashed about! Anyway, he had a small white scar on his lip that was barely visible by the time he was a teenager. You could only see it if he stretched his lip and looked for it.

Wow as in tore whole thing open and still only a small scar? Their young skin is so clever isn’t it

Aw I get it, I'm sorry you're upset. Obviously we haven't seen it but it'll probably fade to nothing or be a badge of honour! Dd has a scar below her mouth from a sports accident that I never notice, and her bf has an eyebrow scar from rugby, exactly as you describe, which is noticeable as he has dark hair, and while you can see it it just looks cool, not bad in any way. I think don't worry at all, especially as you can always have revision surgery if necessary. They get so many bumps in their school years, especially sports related.
