My 1 year old NEVER gets our stomach bugs

I’m not exactly looking for advice, I’m just looking for someone to give me some sort of explanation 😂. Since my 15 month old started nursery 6 months ago, myself and my partner have had FOUR stomach bugs. They’ve all been pretty horrid, but our girl hasn’t got any of them! Is this a pretty normal thing for that age group? Everyone else I know seems to think it’s odd, but there must be a reason!

Obviously solid immune system, 1 of my Dcs never got sickness bugs despite them. Going round i never get them either tbf. Dc1 and Dh always got them.

AntiHop · 07/07/2025 19:49

Are you breastfeeding? If so, that could be the answer.

Remmy123 · 07/07/2025 19:56

None of my kids picked up tummy bugs - or got ooorky at nursery school secondary dciol
etc

son out of the blue got diagnosed with an autoimmune condition so we were very shocked!!!

Jessie2024 · 07/07/2025 20:02

@Coffeeishot I thought so too, however she always gets every other illness around 😂 she currently has a bad cough and a cold, which she gets often. It’s so strange how she gets some things and not others!

@AntiHop I breastfed for a year, I stopped when she was 12 months. Maybe that helped!

@Remmy123 hope your son is okay! So strange how different their immune systems are

Maybe she’s a carrier? Where did you get your bugs from? Are you teachers? Unusual for adults to get repeated stomach bugs without a child passing them on…

If you breastfeed when baby is ill your nipples actually transfer the illness and send back antibodies. I read about it when I had to use shields (as shields inhibit the process). Fascinating!

Jessie2024 · 07/07/2025 20:04

@fourelementary oh I 100% think she’s the carrier, we never got bugs before she went to nursery. Is it normal for the carrier to never get the actual bug?

It can be…

Jessie2024 · 07/07/2025 20:06

@Optimustime Ive heard this before! It’s amazing isn’t it. I wonder if she’s still got the immunity from me from the bugs I got when I was breastfeeding? We had our latest stomach bug last week and she didn’t get it.

OP posts:
Jessie2024 · 07/07/2025 20:07

@fourelementary how strange, I’ve never heard of that before, especially since it’s 4 different stomach bugs we’ve had! She has a strong stomach 😂

I couldn’t breastfeed, DD had a section and IV antibiotics - I was convinced her immune system was going to be ruined.

She is never ill, I can count on one hand the amount of times she’s had even a mild sniffle. Never had a tummy bug. She’s 5 in a few weeks just finishing Reception (previously school nursery and childminder before that.) Her dad and I are complete demics! I don’t know what it is but wish I did.

I do realise how incredibly lucky we've been and hope I’m not tempting fate! I know we’re not out of the germy woods yet.

Jessie2024 · 07/07/2025 20:10

@IcelandQuestion that’s amazing! Long may it continue for us both!

You know that rotovirus vaccination they get……

Jessie2024 · 07/07/2025 20:15

@ScaryM0nster nope but I’ve just googled it 😂 I have zero memory of her getting any sort of oral vaccine, but I was pretty sleep deprived in the newborn stage so it makes sense 😂. That vaccine must definitely have helped.

I don't have an explanation but I am like this. 😂
3 children, countless stomach bugs over the years, I've been sicked on, pooed on etc and never caught anything! We were staying with grandparents once and everyone came down with it except me! 😂 I've also wondered if I am carrier?!

Watch me catch a stomach bug next week now I've said this!! 😂

Jessie2024 · 07/07/2025 20:17

@Anonymouse22 wow lucky you! Stomach bugs are the worst 😂. I’d love to know why some people are like this. It’s like how I’ve never had chickenpox, neither have my brother or sister. It’s like we have some strange family immunity. Very odd.

OP posts:
Anonymouse22 · 07/07/2025 20:19

I did used to get them as a child though so it hasn't been a complete life long thing, just seems to be as an adult. It is very strange , I hope I haven't tempted fate with a tummy bug though 😂

hopefully your daughter will carry on the same through school, one of mine is the first to catch a sickness bug when it's going round 🙄😂

Mindyourfunkybusiness · 07/07/2025 20:23

My youngest was like this when it came to d&v - she's only had it once in 8y and tbh it felt more like food poisoning rather than a bug! Rest of us suffer like the regular folk 😅

With flu and colds she got loads for two years and now again very rare and I'd have full on flu and she has mild annoyance of sniffles etc.

borderlaise · 07/07/2025 20:30

My child has never had a sickness bug, never had diarrhoea, never thrown up, never had an infection or needed antibiotics. Never broken a bone. They have only had minor colds and coughs. They started nursery age 12 months, then on to school and now almost a teen. Attended various clubs and activities along the way too. Didn’t get covid even though we did twice and half their class did. They have missed 1 day of nursery and school through illness in their whole life. I do not understand how but I guess it can happen! They were formula fed too so it’s not down to BF either. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Jessie2024 · 07/07/2025 20:32

@Anonymouse22 its the opposite for me! I never had stomach bugs as a child, and now I get them all 😂 I wish it were the other way around!

OP posts:
Blarn · 07/07/2025 20:33

Dd1 had endless colds but no stomach bugs. The first time she had diarrhoea with an illness I think she was about four. Is 10 now and has still only had a couple of stomach bugs. Dd2 fewer colds but way more stomach bugs.

Jessie2024 · 07/07/2025 20:33

@Mindyourfunkybusiness that’s great! My girl seems to get a lot of colds and coughs, so hopefully that’ll slow down soon!

Jessie2024 · 07/07/2025 20:34

@borderlaise is your child a superhuman? Genuinely 😂
