My DS 16 months has a dermoid cyst that he is awaiting surgery on to remove. The paeds surgeon told us to keep an eye for any redness as it may become infected.

Little one has had chicken pox this week so has been especially itchy but the cyst seems to have doubled in size and is so much redder, it wasn't red before. Also it usually contains a white head that seems now to be more yellow.

I took him to the gp who was useless on tussah and took one brief look and said not infected but it's got bigger and redder since then.

What are your thoughts on potentially infected? Should I get another gp appointment for tomorrow? We go to Spain on Tuesday so really don't want to be going away without some treatement for it!

Is it hot to touch? Put fucidin on, you should be able to get it from a pharmacy. If redness spreading you need to return to GP. Draw a line round the red

Yes. Get it seen. I had similar a few years ago and had to go to A&E because it suddenly got much worse (I phoned 111 for advice first). I was put on antibiotics and they drained it and cleaned it up. It was incredibly painful.

@Anonymous2029 it's not hot to touch no but it's certainly gotten bigger. Great idea about drawing round the red. He's asleep at the minute but I'll do it in the morning.

Yes very. I had this, antibiotics didn’t touch it and ended up with surgery. Then had to spend months having it packed and dressed. I wish I had had a tiny procedure to remove it earlier before infection

LightCameraBitchSmile · 02/07/2025 20:58

Oh and whatever you do, DO NOT squeeze it.

@LightCameraBitchSmile that's what the gp tried to do the other day! It's a hard marble style lump though so nothing seemed to come out!

Just updating this incase anyone searches across this with the same thing in future.

We took DS to the GP this morning and he sent us to A&E. They have had a close look at it alongside all his obs and have prescribed some oral abx. Need to keep a close eye on any changes and if it doesn't get smaller after a few days on the abx we need to go back!

Despite the 24 hours of antibiotics it looks even more red and swollen today! It hasn't gotten any bigger but it's much angrier. Any tips?
