Experience with umbilical hernia treatment?

Ds is currently just over 2.5 and has had an umbilical hernia since birth. Initially Dr wanted to watch and wait but we saw the gp today about a separate issue and she's put in a referral to get it looked at by consultants as waiting lists are long and it's not got any better. (Nor has it got worse or bothered him)

I just wondered what to expect really and if there's anything parents who've been through it would recommend?

First noticed my son’s when he was about 3 but it was never a problem. We decided to get it repaired when he was about 10, as he sometimes felt sore after playing football, and it seemed a good time to sort it before he grew during puberty. Simple surgery and healed well. The biggest problem ( for him!) was the surgery was at the start of half term so he didn’t get any time off school!

It's very likely the consultants will write back to say this is considered normal up until 4-5 years old, and just to re-refer after that! Even then most are not operated on as I understand it.
