How do you stop chest infections?

The baby is 14 months, and until 12m was totally healthy, but now every cold turns into a chest infection (3 since April) and we're on our second hospital stay. He's got two older sisters who bring colds home (age 7&8) and they always share them with him!

If your child was prone to chest infections, did you find that anything helped? Do you have any infection control tips that work? I really don't want to be back here next month!

You can't really. My little ones are both prone to viral wheeze and every cough sees a hospital admission for us too. I try to be vigilant with hand washing, I've done a lot of explaining about not putting hands in mouths, germs etc.

Have a low bar for going to the drs/a&e to try and get on top of it before they need hospital. For us with the wheeze, it's been helpful to take note of what they do when we get there, first line treatment etc and I do that at home now so when we get there I can always say I've done xyz so now need something that I can't do at home (oxygen/steroids/nebuliser)

Thank you!

I'm definitely getting better at spotting the danger signs - the first one came totally out of the blue, but I called the ambulance about 12 hours earlier this time. They still reckoned I should have called sooner though.

It's rubbish, isn't it? He's too little to understand about hygiene, and his big sisters do their best but play a lot with very huggy, snotty nursery children ...

I don't know if this will work for child but I use to get a lot of chest infections, for the past 10+ years I take a spoonful of manuka honey every day and haven't had one since. I rarely get colds now

Thanks @Hayley1256 - I'll give it a go! Anything to stop us being back here again.
