Constant cough

My son is 5 and seems to always have a cough and snotty nose. At first I thought he was getting ill all the time but I'm now wondering if there's another cause. It's been worse the last few days. Yesterday he was coughing so much he barely had a break. Then come the evening he was sick 5 times due to coughing so hard. He's like this every few weeks. He was prescribed an inhaler two weeks ago at a@e just in case. Although had a fever that time. We used it but not sure if it really helped. It's been 6 months to a year if him being like this and the GP fobs us off with it's probably a virus. Does anyone else have a similar experience? What was the outcome? Our local urgent care recently said to press the GP for a paediatric referral to investigate so going to do that tomorrow.

Did your son go to nursery and if so, was he like this with nursery bugs?

I think my son's is hay fever and antihistamines do seem to be helping, but if it's been all year including winter then probably not in your case. Unless there are other potential allergens like pets in your house?

It's all year round. We have Guinea pigs but they're outside and he doesn't handle them anyway. I've tried an antihistamine just in case but not sure if it's working

Have you tried an antihistamine?

SupposesRoses · 15/06/2025 23:08

What kind of inhaler? If it’s a preventive inhaler for cough variant asthma we were told it takes a while to have the full effect

Might need to try a different ingredient antihistamine

We were just given a blue one so not a preventative one. Definitely going to see what the doctor says. He's worse at night and first thing
