Could it be coeliac?

Hi all,

My DD is 6 and she bas been complaining of stomach pain for over a weeks now, she also had smelly farts, bloating, and tiredness.
We've cut out dairy as she was intolerant when she was younger to see if that helped but it hasn't made a difference. My husband is GF, not coeliac just intolerant to it so I was wondering whether my DD could have coeliac disease or be gluten intolerant.
I've put a request in for a doctors appointment but waiting to hear from them.

Thank you

Hi OP, my DD is coeliac and had the same symptoms. She was diagnosed (finally) aged 6 - we had 3-4 years of bad stomach / diarrhoea (what the doc diagnosed initially as toddlers diarrhoea), slow growth, heartburn, headaches, general aches and just not feeling great. My advice is get a GP appointment but DO NOT stop her wheat intake until she has a blood test to check for coeliac - otherwise it will give an incorrect result. It’s hard, but it’s so important to have that coeliac diagnosis, if that is what is causing her symptoms.

Also, forgot to say, if you have a close relative who is gluten intolerant/ coeliac, you have a much higher chance of having the same issue. My DS is also coeliac (he was asymptotic and diagnosed after DD, aged 8) but it turns out nearly all of my entire paternal family are all coeliac / GI! It skipped my dad, me (and my sister) and came out in my children.

I Second that and request blood test and also a stool sample test. GP maybe dismissive of these symptoms as they usually are.

Your daughter’s symptoms are those of the same as my daughter had when diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. She didn’t have much in the way of bowel problems other than very smelly poo so I was quite suprised it was Crohn’s disease. Tiredness was one of her main symptoms.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

Hi, sorry for the no reply.
We were back at the doctors last week and have done a stool sample which was dropped off yesterday. Bloods are going to be done tomorrow to test for Coeliac and things to do with immune system. My worry is that it all comes back as normal and we're back at square one with my DD still in a lot of pain with her tummy.
Tiredness has been hard with being back at school as well as the other symptoms. She is also getting random headaches too.
Thank you for all the advice @Freyer & @Lbet .
I hadn't thought of Crohns but it does run in my family so that could be something to check. Even if things come back as normal will they still carry on looking into why this is happening? How long do stool sample results take to come back? And blood test results?
Thank you!!

Ah bless you - if it comes back clear, I would ask / insist on a referral to paediatrics. If it is compromising your child’s quality of life, then I think they will need to take it more seriously. My DD suffered for years pre-diagnosis and the GP (who I have since changed) told me that DD was making it up and her heartburn was a tummy ache and her debilitating headaches (at 3 years old!) were products of anxiety. Here’s to hoping you and your DC get some answers from the blood test x

It is good that the rigjt tests are being done.

If you are told sll test are normal then ask what the calprotectin level was in the stool sample and you can ask for a copy of the blood test results.

You can then let us know on here what they are and we may understand them for you.

You will find an awful lot that a GP’s normal is very different to what normal should be.

Come back and let us know.

If your gp does come back and say all normal point out that crohns is in your family because it can run through families.
