DS (6) earlobes stick outwards

I feel awful for asking, but I'm not sure if we should look at sorting DS's earlobes or not? Family have all said it isn't particularly obvious, but I can't help but notice it.

I don't really know what to call it, because it's not quite like protruding ears, it's just the earlobes sort of flap up? He has said someone at school made fun, but other than that he generally seems okay. What would you do? Is it obvious? Would we be awful parents for looking to fix it?

It looks cute! If he's not bothered, I would leave it be. When he is older he can decide.

Honestly I think I’d look to correct this if I could. ( kids are just so mean these days and appearance seems to be the be all and end all. Fully accept that it makes me shallow.

@lizzyBennet08 I feel like I want to, because I don't want him to suffer later on, but how do I even approach it with him? I don't want to suddenly make him feel really self conscious, particularly if he isn't keen to do it, but I also don't want to just ignore the options available if it can save him from issues later

I have a nephew with similar ears. He’s 15 now and with facial hair appearing, general change of facial features, it’s really not as obvious compared to his younger years. If it was my son I would leave it. We all have imperfections and I don’t think this is a big enough one to try and ‘fix’ an a young age. He can decide when he’s older.

They look utterly normal to me?! Some ear lobes are connected to the side of the head all the way to the bottom, and some ear lobes are not connected like these. But both types are normal, and I can't see how on earth you would even start "correcting" this? You would seriously put your DC through the pain of an operation and recovery, and the risk of infection for ever so slightly prominent ear lobes?

Scruffalo1 · 03/05/2025 22:03

@PuzzleFrog the picture doesn't quite show it, but they basically form a bit of a "c" shape if that makes sense. The earlobe sticks up and out. People would joke about his "flappy ears" when he was a baby, but honestly I never saw it. Now I do, but I think I am probably just fixating on it unnecessarily.

I've uploaded another picture from earbuddies and it looks a bit like that bottom right picture - that's the best I can find to give a better idea!

Possibly a better picture (the hat is pushing out the top part of the ear)

Prepared for people to tell me I'm being ridiculous. That wouldn't be a bad thing!

He will likely grow into his ears as he gets older. There is a lot of growing to be done in a face / jawline!
