Desloratadine syrup discontinued?

We finally got our ENT appointment for DC for his awful dust, pollen & pet allergies, and the doc three new drugs which we are hopeful will make a difference.
But just had a call from the pharmacy saying that the desloratadine 2.5mg/5ml syrup has been discontinued! And there is only the option of a 5mg tablet which is too much for (small for his age) 10yo DC.
Pharmacist said there was no other option, and prescription would be marked as "not dispensed".

How do we get hold of 2.5mg doses of desloratadine in the UK? Any ideas?

Thanks.

Grind up the tablet in some honey?

My dh used to take desloratadine and was moved to loratidine for some reason (probably cost!)
Would loratidine be an option?

DC has been on loratadine for ages and it's not doing much. Doctor said desloratadine was better so we should try it.

Pharmacist refused to dispense 5mg tablets for me to split in half without the express instructions from the doctor on the prescription so I might have to try and get hold of an ENT doctor again. That will be weeks/months more waiting...

Has he tried fexofenadine?

Get the secretary’s phone number or email address and explain what you need and why. You can’t wait for another appointment to get this sorted.

No, that name doesn't ring a bell... Is it good?

@PuzzleFrog fexofenadine used to be prescription only but there is a version you can buy over the counter too although don't know the age range for that

Thanks all, I'll see if I can get a new prescription ASAP.

If you have any friends living in Europe, the syrup is still widely available under the brand name Aerius. It's prescription only, but antihistamines are not tightly controlled so there might be a way to get it.
