Viral induced wheeze + vomiting

Wondering if anyone has any experience with a child who vomits during episodes of viral induced wheeze? We've been struggling for this for a few years with my 5yo. After a few recent hospital admissions for low oxygen during one of his (pretty regular) virus+vomiting+wheezing episodes, he's been diagnosed with viral induced wheeze and given a brown inhaler. His sats were down to 87% at our latest a+e visit, and he's been as bad as that before too.

I've never been sure what comes first, the virus or the vomiting, but the latest doctor said that sometimes when the lungs are under a lot of pressure with wheezing it can cause vomiting - anyone heard of this? It's A LOT of vomiting, like can't keep water down, not just from coughing too much. He's been like this since he was about 2 and we soon worked out it's definitely not recurrent tummy bugs as noone else in the family ever gets sick.

Any tips on treatment would be greatly appreciated, as things seem to be getting worse not better. It's awful for him, struggling to breathe whilst also throwing up. I'm also a bit worried about daily use of the steroid inhaler as on the info sheet it says it can interfere with weight gain, which he already struggles massively with.

I'm getting quite desperate with it now, I'd really hoped it would have improved by now. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who's got experience of viral induced wheezing and if it turned into asthma/if they grew out of it.

My youngest out grew viral wheeze around 4? I don't remember it making him vomit.

However a proper heavy cold, will make me vomit. Usually when lying down. I got a bit better when I was about 6 and mastered the art of blowing nose but it's never completely gone away. Maybe once every couple of years a cold will have me going to bed with a bucket.

He needs to be referred to a respitory consultant.
Ask your GP.
He could have asthma.

@groovylady yes, we're seeing the asthma nurse soon so I'll ask her. As far as I know they don't diagnose asthma until they're a bit older though?

Posting in solidarity - my son is three and we’ve had several episodes now of him vomiting alongside a wheeze/cough, but not when he’s been coughing so hard that he has been sick (which we have had plenty of too 😩).

I did some literature review to try and see if there was any correlation between vomiting and asthma, and found a paper concluding that asthmatics are significantly more likely to experience GI symptoms (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10648366/). So could be related to that, certainly makes sense to me!

Hope your meeting with the asthma nurse goes well - I’ve noticed a real improvement with regular preventer use, but we’re now looking at Montelukast to hopefully get on top of things even more.

Good luck!
