Enterovirus meningitis

Hello,
I’m a first time mum, hopefully seeking some reassurance and positive stories from others who’ve been through a similar experience. My beautiful 8 week old was admitted to hospital last Friday afternoon with a fever, lethargy and some irritability. A lumbar puncture confirmed enterovirus meningitis. All in all it was a mild case - no seizures, breathing support or ICU stay. She was brighter on Saturday and seemingly back to herself on Sunday. We were discharged on Monday. She breastfed and slept well during our stay, despite me being an absolute wreck and worried out of my mind. Thanks to Dr Google, I am feeling very concerned about potential long term neurological impacts, even though I understand these to be fairly rare and the pediatric team at this hospital did not share my concerns.

It is all scary at the time. Probably commoner than people realise in very small babies, and a proportion may not even be seen in hospital if their symptoms stay non-specific.

There are medical guidelines supporting the view that the risk of long-term complications is not higher than baseline children, and no specific follow-up is needed.
