Constipation

Both of my children suffer with constipation and i am wondering if anybody has found a root cause?

My little girl has not long turned 2. She is on a sachet of laxido daily or she backs up. I had suspicions when she was a baby of CMPA but dismissed. But i remember at around 1 we did dairy free for a little and saw no improvement so reintroduced it.

My little boy is 5.5 months. Again suspicions of CMPA due to green poo, only going every other day. Reflux and very slight eczema. He also had extremely bad colic. We tried a hypoallergenic formula and his poo was great. Brown and going a couple of times a day, however it made him miserable due to aggravating reflux and causing a feeding aversion.

Started early weaning with him and he has gone from going every other day to needing lactulose.

Both have good fibre and liquid intake.

Anyone in a similar position? Have you found the cause?

My DS was similar, and he turned out to have a Gluten Intolerance. It might be worth trying out removing gluten from their diet and seeing how they get on. Do they get enough fruit and veg?

Ah interesting! Yes lots of fruit and veg. Both obsessed with fruit! Did you have testing or just elimination diet?

thank you!

We did an elimination diet, you'll need to give it time (I think the advice is 6 weeks without gluten before you'll see any change). Keep a Poo Diary - ERIC as you're doing so, as that'll be useful for the doctors, who may then want to go on and do testing. edit: side note, but buckwheat is a great substitute for a lot of things with gluten- freee do buckwheat pasta, and the FLEUR ALPINE buckwheat cereal is a great porridge substitute from 6+ months (but my older kids liked it too!)

My eldest has severe chronic constipation, has tried every medication under the sun, has had multiple hospital stays and has had every diagnostic test you can imagine but we have come up with no answers. He is currently having ongoing daily irritations with the long term plan that he will have either and ACE stoma or ileostomy fitted. He only started showing signs at about the age of 3 when we started toilet training and seemed perfectly healthy up until that point. His surgeon feels that it is caused by a misfiring in the neurons between his bowels and brain so he brain can't tell when to open but we have no definitive answer.

My youngest showed signs of struggling to poo when we started weaning at 6months, similar to what you are describing. We tried increasing his fluid and fibre intake but found that he needed a sachet of movicol a day to keep things moving. Now at age 3 and a half he is off the movicol completely. He just needed a little assistance to keep his stools soft to make it easier for them to pass
