Clarithromycin side effects

Hi all!

my poor 8 month old is half way through a 2 week course of clarithromycin for a nasty chest infection that he’s had on and off since January! Apparently this is the best antibiotic to (hopefully!) clear the bacteria which is making the infection repeatedly return.

the only thing is it tastes absolutely vile! Like paint stripper and leaves a nasty burning sensation in your throat so I’m having difficulty in getting him to take it but I do manage in the end! anyway….. in the last few days he’s been really constipated and when he does manage to poo they are almost solid (like a thick play doh!) and he is struggling all day to actually pass it. Also he’s been waking hourly from midnight with what seems like stomach pains as he’s writhing around pulling his legs up. Has anyone else’s child had this when on this particular antibiotic? If so, does the stomach cramps and painful poos ease once the course is finished?

thank you in advance for reading 😊

p.s, he is also BLW/puree fed and is recently up to 3 meals a day, could this be the culprit?

I would suggest changing to azithromycin which is part of the same family and tolerated much more by people.
i has exact same issues when on clarithromycin. Severe burning in throat and esophagus and the most awful iron taste and sensation. I only tolerated 3 days before I had to ask to change. Had no symptoms on azithromycin and it also is usually only given as a 3 day dose.
