I made a mistake with her cups and my DD (age 2) has drunk milk that was out of the fridge for over 4 hours. How likely is she to be sick? 😔

I am so.old that, when I started school, we had free milk.

The dairy would deliver 300 bottles of 1/3 pint milk to our school at about 6am.

It would sit in the sun (or snow, depending on the season) all morning until we drank it.

We all.lived to tell the tale

Me too. Horrible wasn't it 🤣

Milk, if off usually makes a repeat appearance VERY quickly. Ask me how I know….🤢

That's very reassuring because we are well over 3 hours past her drinking it. Sorry for bringing back bad memories though!

Stop worrying.
It was Maggie Thatcher who stopped the free 1/3 pint of milk for school kids. I recall it being “warm” to drink at morning break times because the school janitor would leave the milk crates in the sun and it would have been in the playground since early morning.
None of us suffered ill affects.

Free milk survivor here!

I can still smell that sour twang.

For the first 12 yrs of my life, I lived in a house with no fridge. No one had milk poisoning in all that time. It was delivered in the morning and still being used in the evening.

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/02/2025 22:20

Me too, @Odras . They kept the crates in front of the radiators all morning.

Balloonhearts · 27/02/2025 22:22

If it was bad enough to make her sick it would have already made an encore. Bad milk tends to come back up really quickly and she would probably have noticed the taste if it was off.

Unlikely unless you’ve got your heating on 30 degrees!! When I was a kid we used to get school milk that sat on the windowsill in full sunlight until morning break by which time it was practically cheese and we all survived!

Same at my school, I remember it well, so lumpy too!! Was always fine after drinking it.

One boy in my class used to put his bottle actually on the radiator at the start of the day so it would be nicely warmed through by break time

If milk went off in 4 hours, how would people have managed before fridges?

Exactly.

thismummydrinksgin · 27/02/2025 22:31

Totally normal to worry about your precious baby, have a bath and unwind for the night x

Cosyvibes · 27/02/2025 22:34

She will be absolutely fine op. Hope you are ok, kids are a never ending worry.

I am another 80s hot milk carton survivor 🤮🤢 anyone else get a fluoride tablet along with the curdling milk?

Are you f*ing kidding? You know kefir is a thing right?

LillyPJ · 27/02/2025 22:37

She won't be sick.

Tiredmum2kids1dog · 27/02/2025 22:39

Maggie thatcher the milk snatcher!

No worries, wasn’t even that long ago! Went to make a brew at work, foolishly didn’t check the date on the milk, thought the brew tasted ‘funny’…and spent a fair bit of time on the loo. I sniffed the milk (which had been in a fridge) and how I didn’t notice I don’t know! I only got half way into my brew before I had to dash so I’m sure she’ll be fine!

FridayFeelingmidweek · 27/02/2025 22:42

Nothing. She'll be fine. I think if you are worrying about this, maybe you might have a little anxiety issues (meaning this kindly). Lots of good advice on the NHS website.

I’d bet my house on her being just dandy!

Lovelysummerdays · 27/02/2025 22:45

I often just take milk out and leave it on the side by the kettle all day. I drink lots of tea the house isn’t overly warm and I’m lucky if four pints lasts the day so it’s fresh. Honestly it’ll be fine.

Kangaroo1 · 27/02/2025 22:55

Thanks all. Feeling more than a bit silly now 🫣. She's had Norovirus twice in recent history, so I guess I just overreacted because I can't face more vomit!

I'll leave you to reminisce about warm milk 😂

I was only thinking last night about milk man deliveries and how milk sits out for at least 6 hours all year round but also, I have read that it is 2hrs max out of the fridge for little ones so yeah, sniff and sip test is the way forward 😂

Totally sympathetic. I have caught every single vomiting bug that my children have brought home.

they are the worst.

Solaire18381 · 27/02/2025 23:22

In work, the milk is left out of the fridge all day, every day. Probably because staff are always popping in the kitchen to make tea and coffee, from 8:00 am until after 5:00 pm. No one has ever been sick through it from what I'm aware of.
