NG tube faecal disimpaction

I've posted lots the last two months so please forgive me

3 year old Son has had 7 weeks diarrhoea and vomiting, had been to GP countless times and had been hospital twice. Yesterday I took him to ED as it's just NOT normal - x Ray showed huge faecal loading throughout intestines

Did an enema and plan was for NG today but as he has been vomiting in the night he had it inserted for Movicol disimpaction (he has since pulled it out and will need another 😮‍💨)

Any experiences of NG disimpaction regimes ? I was so shocked it was constipation because not only has he had diarrhoea but he's had ginormous fully formed poos! How many days in hospital does it tend to take? I've been up all night panicking about causes of constipation and how has it become this bad 😖

@clinellwipe hi it's me, I sent you a little DM a while ago after your last post I'm not sure if you got it or not.

Honestly, I'm not one bit surprised it's severe constipation because the same happened with my little boy with his coeliac disease. He didn't need the NG tube though, are they using that because your ds is refusing to drink the laxido/movicol?

Have you had the test or results yet of the coeliac screening?

Agree with the previous poster that your son's symptoms are typical of chronic constipation. I'm also surprised that they are doing a movicol disimpaction by NG tube. When my son has been in he has been on KleanPrep via NG tube alongside phosphate enemas and IV fluids. I believe the standard treatment is 5 days at which point they re-xray and then continue to x-ray every 2 days until clear. The first time my son was admitted for a clear out we were in for 9 days, the second time around was 12 but he is particularly difficult to clear and I have been told that most kids are clear within the 5 days

@Peanut91 - thank you , I really appreciate hearing other people's experiences.

@Nogodsnomasters hi!! I haven't ever checked my DMs before 😅 just walking through hospital labyrinth now but will look when I'm sat down. This is all really interesting to read - I do think coeliac makes sense now the puzzle pieces are coming together. My husband and I are alarmed by the vomiting but we're clueless about paediatrics.

Hi OP,I posted on your thread yesterday, I'm so glad you've made some progress. It's funny because my DD's problems were due to her being 'constipated' too, but I didn't want to jump to that on your post yesterday. She was vomiting anywhere between 20-30 times a day but because she was a baby it was just put down to reflux. It was only when they did an xray they discovered she was full of poo!

clinellwipe · 23/02/2025 08:29

@OdeToBarney I have had tunnel vision and constipation has been last thing on my mind during all this ... so grateful to the doctor who suggested they do the xray finally - so simple and quick and told us what none of us were thinking. My son has been so brave, much braver than me x

I don't use the app just browser so my dm's come up on the same little button as my thread notifications (the little person/body) if that helps any!

Has your little one had the blood test done yet for coeliacs? I can't remember if you said he had already or not. Little ones being in hospital is so stressful, I really feel for you.

It's weird that we've had almost the same experience, except with us, it went on over six months. Good luck with the disimpaction routine and well done brave boy 💗

Constipation is an odd one as it often presents with symptoms that we don't associate with constipation such as loose stools etc.
My son was initially diagnosed similarly to your son after a vomiting episode and an X-ray showed he had fecal matter back up into his stomach.

We are now 3.5years down the road so please feel free to ask any questions you may have as we have been there and done it and still on this journey

Nogodsnomasters · 26/02/2025 07:31

@clinellwipe how are things at the moment? Been thinking of you and your DS

clinellwipe · 26/02/2025 10:01

We're on day 5 in hospital, has had 3 klean prep regimes. The goal is brown water but he's still eating obviously so I don't know how we would ever get to that? Can't not eat during a 5 day admission after 7 weeks vomiting!

He's definitely feeling better as he is currently running laps around the ward playroom and being hyper in a way I've never seen before !! Feel like someone has given him amphetamines!

Thanks for asking xx

Oh wow 3 kleen preps in 5 days, bless him that is tough. You must be exhausted from running back and forth to the hospital or perhaps living there with him! Is there any word on them discharging him?
