What is this rash?

DD (8) gets eczema, she's had eczema-y legs pretty much all winter, kept under control with emollient and steroid cream (prescribed).

This week the rash on the back of her legs has got hard, raised, bumpy... and horrifyingly looks like the NHS pictures of scabies.

We have a clean house, her clothes, pjs and bedding are changed regularly - if you've ever seen real life scabies before, is this what it looks like?

I should add, of course we'll hot-foot it to the GP on Monday

More to add...

We have changed our washing powder, but have changed back. It could be that she's allergic to the new one and there are still clothes in circulation thay we're washed with the new one.

It really itches, but not as much as the eczema rash on the front of her legs and around her ankles.

We've seen the doctor (twice) once a phone appt with photos and once face to face and the doctor diagnosed "allergic eczema" but that was before the current raised bumpy rash.

I can remember a schoolfriend having scabies on her wrist and she had little red "burrow marks" which I cannot see in your pic so I would say not scabies but anyway scabies is just another one of those things you wouldn't wish for but is easy to get shot of and isn't caused by not being clean, similar to headlice or threadworms so don't be worried. Easy to say. Ha ha I'm making myself itchy now....

My daughter's eczema turned into this pattern a few years ago, resolved with more rigorous eczema treatment. Do the scabies treatment for peace of mind as well.

Molluscum contagiosum maybe otherwise a contact rash

CrowsInMyGarden · 22/02/2025 21:28

@gettingthehangofsewing I have heard of that before but it does sound like a Harry Potter spell doesn't it?

OhNoPleaseNotScabies · 22/02/2025 21:30

Thank you all for your reassurances!

I know scabies isn't the end of the world (it just sounds so grim), but knowing there are other things it could be is helpful.

Thank you!

😂true . My son had it, I'd never heard of it but it is really common.

Hi just wondering if you got any diagnosis on this rash? My daughter has exact same I same location. Just looks different to her past excema.

OhNoPleaseNotScabies · 14/03/2025 17:50

The doc wasnt sure if it was molluscum contagiousum or folliculitis. She was prescribed an antibiotic cream, which seems to be helping.
