Itchy Allergic Reaction after surgery

My DS had surgery yesterday. Last night, he started to itch all over. Moves from one part of his body to another, starting on his belly and moving to his leg, then his arm, then his face, etc, but there is no rash that I can see. We have been to the pharmacy, and they gave us Piriton for him. I'm also trying to speak to the GP, but we don't know what he is reacting to. We are going to try a damp cloth to wash him without getting the wounds wet. The itch, at one point or another, is all over his body

Any advice or what else can do would be amazing!

What type of anaesthetic did he have? Surely it'll be from that or the pain meds. It's a common occurrence after anaesthetic or narcotics. Did they not warn you?

The itching I had after a c section might be worse than the recovery!

Did he have morphine at all?

VivMemory · 21/02/2025 10:41

They gave him gas and the milky colour drugs. He also had local anaesthetic into the cut. I think they gave him fentanyl. He took a long time to wake up and recover. The itching only started last night. He had his appendix out a few years ago but never had this reacion

It’s possibly the fentanyl then. Can you phone the ward for advice?

I have tried, but the call just rang out. I am hopeing the GP calls us back soon too. The antihistamine hasn't made any difference just made him more tired

PP's comparison with post-c-section itching isn't that helpful - the itching after neuraxial opioids for a c-section is really common but it's much less common with oral/IV opioids, particularly with the small dose of fent he'd probably have had for minor daycase surgery. When it does happen though it may respond to the anti-emetic ondansetron better than antihistamines (but it will eventually just settle down with time). Did you also post about him having TED stockings post op? Could it be them irritating him (some have latex in them as well as them just generally being synthetic and irritating). It's relatively unusual for kids to have them after day case surgery, so may be worth asking them what the risks vs benefits are for him and possibly take them off if the itching continues.

We are seeing our GP now at 4:15 pm, so I will ask him. I'm not sure where the surgery sits on the scale of minor to major, etc., but it was testicle torsion surgery. I did think it was unusual for him to have the socks on, but the only thing I can think of is we did tell them his day / DH had a DVT after an operation. The socks he has are like below? I'll ask the GP later what the risks vs benefits are for them. We did take them off earlier for an hour when he had a small shower. The itching is still all over his body, the best way I can only describe it is like the Whac-A-Mole game it pops up in one place, then another, etc. It's never all in the same place at the same time. I am not sure if it's related and I am rambling on, but he feels hot now, and his temp is 37.7

The GP thinks he has an infection and has given us amoxicillin, and they also think it'll be a mix of all the medication yesterday that has caused all the itching. He expects that to ease off in the next day or so. the GP also gave us an emergency letter incase we need to go to A&E over the weekend
