Lump on neck

My son has had a lump on his neck for over 12 months. It is firm and painless. We went to see the Gp who arranged an ultrasound which was done last April. The ultrasound technician was baffled by it but when the GP called with the results I was told it was a sebaceous cyst and that we would be referred to dermatology to have it removed. Roll on 10 months later…… we attend the appointment with dermatology who have said that it isn’t a cyst, it shows signs of vascularity and she has no idea what it is!
She then asked if we would just like to leave it as she doesn’t think it’s anything sinister. But as she doesn’t know what it is she can’t say how big it will get.
Am I wrong to want to know what the lump is? She has referred us to ENT for them to look at it.

thanks for reading

Yes, I would try to get a diagnosis. I’m not a medic, but I wonder if it’s a lipoma? They can be vascular. A biopsy can confirm and they are usually removed under local anaesthetic. Removal is probably the best bet as he’s young, as they do grow, albeit it can be slow. Once removed, the chances of it re-occurring are small , so I’d want to take it off now while it’s not particularly noticeable.

Worth suggesting this to your doctor?

Thank you for your reply, that was my thought process too, why wait for it to grow when we could have it removed now. The dermatologist didn’t think it was a lipoma either due to its size and firmness. Hopefully they will agree to a biopsy or straight removal at his next appointment 😊
