Varicocele 10yr old

Has anybody's son ever had a varicocele?
I'm pretty sure my 10yr old has one.
He has an ultrasound next week, but just want to be prepared for what it might mean if that is what it is.
Will he need surgery?
It's quite large and noticeable, but not causing him any pain.

DS1 did - his appeared when he was 14; they monitored it for a while and he had keyhole surgery to fix it when he was 15. I don't think there was an urgent need for surgery but they wanted to get it done while he could still be on the children's ward. It was v straightforward day surgery and he hasn't had any problems since. He's now 26.
