Lumps on babies neck

Hey, my baby is 17 days old and since birth he’s had 2 lumps on his neck, kind of looks like it’s on his vein (but I am no expert). I have mentioned it to a few midwives and they all said nothing to be concerned about but no one has given me an answer as to what it is. I am convinced the bottom lump has gone a bit bigger. It is movable and squishy, especially the top one. Anyone have any ideas what it could be?

Hi

congratulations on your new baby.

I had lumps that looked like this. They are called cystic hygromas. They are part of the lymphatic system. They are harmless as far as I know. I am not a medical professional. I was under Great Ormond Street for them as I believe they are quite rare. They were mostly not painful. I think you should see the GP. Am not really sure what area they would be under.

I hope I havn’t alarmed you in any way. I just think it’s better to be informed as opposed to go round in the dark for months. I could be wrong too. So get to a GP.

@GoodStuffAnnie thank you for replying to me. I had a look online with cystic hygroma and they seem like big lumps. Are you sure you had the same as my baby? (Sorry for the questioning!) x

Yes the pictures online all look very large! I’m in my 40s and I remember first looking online at 20 something and thinking ey! They’re massive! Mine looked like your babies. They were always Brussel sprout sized. Some times one sometimes several. They were on me as a newborn. I had two operations at 4 and 8.

Having another look at your photos…they do look small. How big are they? Fruit wise.

Em232 · 08/02/2025 16:36

@GoodStuffAnnie to be honest they are smaller than a pea! One looks white (the top one). I’m honestly so clueless as to what it could be. I have booked an app with the GP but I am so eager to find out sooner rather than later (as my app is on 18th!) x

Might be deep haemangiomas. You don’t always get the colour.

Oblomov25 · 08/02/2025 18:22

Definitely email the pictures to your hv and also your gp, just so it's recorded.

nocoolnamesleft · 08/02/2025 20:47

Interesting. Look a bit visible for the average lymph node, and not quite right for a not-coloured-yet haemangioma. Doesn't look right for a branchial cyst. Cystic hygroma sounds vaguely possible. I think someone's going to need to see this face to face to actually figure it out, and maybe an ultrasound to be certain.

Em232 · 05/05/2025 09:39

Thank you everyone for the suggestions! He’s had an ultrasound and they are just calcified lumps, possibly trauma from birth. So thankful they are harmless xx
