Nasal Flu Vaccine

Hi,

My 10 year old was diagnosed with chronic anaemia 2 weeks ago, after catching bug after bug; his levels of iron are 1/4 of what they should be.

Nonetheless he had the nasal flu vaccine yesterday, as usual - he's never had a reaction before; last night he got a blocked nose, fever of 38.1, and this morning feels sick and is a bit achey. So far he's not REALLY unwell but def not enjoying the day! Anyone have experience of post nasal vaccine side effects? I wondered if perhaps his lowered immunity due to the iron has meant he's reacted badly - we haven't left the house in 4 days aside from to get the vaccine so i'm amazed he's managed to pick up an entirely separate bug, and it started about 18 hours after the vaccine...

Any experiences gratefully received.

For covid and therefore I assume other illnesses too symptoms normally start 5 days after exposure.

I'm sorry he isn't feeling well. The incubation period for some viruses is longer than 4 days, so that fact he hasn't been out is irrelevant really. Covid is about 6 days. Have you checked for this? He could, of course, have contracted a cold/flu at the surgery when getting the vaccine! Being so anaemic, he is susceptible to all bugs going around currently. When I was anaemic, I was getting UTI's and colds all the time. Never had a UTI since!

I'd be giving paracetamol or ibuprofen for the fever and keeping an eye on him.

Hopefully, you were also given advice about healthy eating in anaemia, maximising iron absorption and things to avoid eating which deplete the uptake of Iron?
