Nails - Post HFM

Son had hand foot & mouth before Christmas. I noticed a week or so ago his nails are now breaking away a little way up from the nail bed. Now they are catching on things but are too low down for me to file or cut. Any ideas on how to help until they come away on their own?

DD had this last year. I think she just waited for them to grow out.

I'm in the same situation with my 5 year old. We put a breathable plaster on each day for a little while until it was ok to trim. Weirdly a full nail was underneath!
