Weight bearing on leg

Hi.
My 4 year old keeps complaining that his knees hurt. Both of them, sometimes together, sometimes one at a time. There is no obvious injury or swelling so we put it down to growing pains. However Friday night when he got out of the car he was unable to bear weight on his left leg. He was crying in pain and couldn't walk. I was on my own with him and his 3 siblings as husband was working away so I gave him ibuprofen and put him to bed and planned to take him to a&e in the morning if it was still the same. He woke up and said it still hurt but he could put weight on it, he was just walking with a limp. As the day went on the limp resolved.
I took him to the gp today who examined him and booked him for an xray and bloods (he already has underlying immune deficiency, under gosh) however he didn't seem to take me to seriously and had he not have been under gosh I think we would have just been sent away.
He did say that some children suffer with their joints when they have an infection- even viral.
Could this be true? Would the pain be so bad he couldn't walk?!
My mind has jumped straight to the worst conclusion and I'm driving myself mad with worry. Does anyone have any advice or had a similar situation?

How is the range of motion with his hip? My son had Perthes disease which showed itself as a limp and referred knee pain.
