Pilonidal cyst in teenager

Hi, looking for some guidance from anyone who has experienced the same. My teen son has a cyst on his coccyx which keeps leaking a lot (sorry for tmi) GP keeps prescribing antibiotics and he has been referred to hospital but app not till July, surely that's a long time for something like this. It's tender and very leaky. Anyone been through same thing? Not sure if I should go back to GP and ask for a quicker referral if that is even possible? Thank you

You need to take him to A/E, he’ll be seen by the general surgeons and they’ll treat him.
he can’t wait until July, that’s ridiculous, GP should’ve fast tracked him.

Thank you for replying, do u think I should I don't want to be wasting their time?

DD had a pilondial cyst before Christmas, hers was not leaky and she was in agony. GP sent her straight to nearest hospital and she had it surgically removed the following morning, antibiotics were offered but we were quite frankly told its fairly pointless because it would likely keep coming back and she'd eventually need the surgery anyway.

mashingwachine · 24/01/2025 22:34

Our A&E would not see him. They have quite strict rules and the fact that he had been treated and referred by a GP would be enough for them to turn him away. There isn't anything extra they could do, A&E isn't a fast track to treatment.

I would try the GP to have the referral pushed

Calmontheoutsider · 24/01/2025 23:04

Will he have the actual surgery in July or just the first appointment? Depending on the surgery he may not be able to sit comfortably for a couple of weeks so it would be ideal if he could have it at the beginning of the school holidays.

I managed the flare ups with antibiotics and antiseptic wipes until a flare up was so bad I was admitted for surgery through A&E.
That was 25 years ago and I think you can
have less invasive laser surgery now?
Best of luck. It was horrible but I’ve been fine since the surgery.
PS - please don’t hesitate to take him to A&E if it becomes too painful. Sometimes the antibiotics are just not enough to get on top of it.

@Calmontheoutsider thank you & good to hear you're all sorted now. Were your flare ups like his ie leaking fluid?

Yes. The area would become
very swollen and leaky. Very taut. Need to keep cleaning with antiseptic and take the antibiotics. Usually that would be enough to get it to go down but eventually it was not.

Calmontheoutsider · 24/01/2025 23:22

Also, I would avoid sitting down for too long while you’re trying to get on top of the infection. You don’t want to get that area too warm.

You probably need to make a thread in the weight loss section.

Our DD once had one, she was in absolute agony. We took her to A&E where she then went into surgery where the cyst was debrided and packed.

I had one as a teenager. It kept bleeding. Seen twice by GP in two days because I was in agony and had surgery the following day
