Iron supplement recommendations for 7 yr old?

Hi,

We are waiting on a referral to see a consultant concerning my daughter’s slow growth and did some blood tests as part of this. The results flagged very low iron which I know can link into growth issues.

Whilst we wait for the referral I wondered if anyone can recommend an effective iron supplement? I have had a look online and there are so many options!

many thanks

If the stores are significantly low / associated with low red blood cells your GP can prescribe prescription iron which is quite a lot more dose than available over the counter.

All the over the counter ones are pretty similar, you should be able to check the actual iron content on the packaging.

Floradix liquid for kids is a decent over the counter option. Whatever you choose make sure it has vit C as well as that helps with absorption. However I agree with PP you may want to ask your GP about prescribed iron as it may be a better option.

There are also IV iron infusions as a much quicker fix for very low iron, but I’m not sure if these are ever done on kids (it would not be a fun process…)

I hope they are considering the reasons for her low iron? Could be an underlying absorption issue like coeliac or Crohns

Thanks both for your responses.

The lack of iron will be investigated further by the consultant I just want to get her something to try and boost her for now. I will look into your recommendations.

@minipie yes, I have also considered a gut issue, mainly coeliac as she does fit some of the other symptoms so will push for checking that too.
