Toddler waking upset during the night

On Friday night my 2.5 year woke up every hour from midnight to 4am crying and upset. She was thirsty and was coughing and retching a bit like she wanted to be sick but didn’t actually vomit. Wasn’t able to tell us what was wrong even though her speech is normally OK. Wondered if it was the start of a bug but she was fine the next day and the following night.

Any idea what could have caused the upset and has anyone experienced similar? I wonder if it was indigestion or reflux or food sensitivity of some sort but she didn’t eat anything new that day. It was an awful night for her and for us so looking to avoid a repeat.

Did she have a nightmare maybe?

Did she have a bit of a cold? Could it be that when she was lying down, the mucus was running down the back of her throat making her cough and gag?

I wondered about night but surely it wouldn’t have happened 4 times if that was the case?
