Fever, constantly sleeping

DS9 was sent home from school Thursday with a fever and no other symptoms. He said he just felt a bit "unwell" so went to the nurse but was surprised she found a fever. Fever was 38.7.

He slept most of the afternoon, but otherwise didn't seem that bad and I assumed it was just a virus. Come Friday morning his temperature had risen to 39.9 and he slept all day, hardly drinking, I kept trying to get him to drink but he says everything tastes horrible. He seemed delirious a couple of times and hard to wake sometimes but I persisted and he would wake enough to drink, say something vaguely sensible, and then go back to sleep. Calpol brought temp down to 38.7 ish. I let him sleep through the day and night.

Now today he's still sleeping. Temp is slightly lower as it's mid 38 with no calpol. I've managed to get probably 1 large glass of water in him all day. But otherwise he's sleeping.

I've never known a virus where someone sleeps almost solidly for 2.5 days with no other symptoms. No coughing/sneezing or gastro signs. Only notable thing is he's really complaining everything tastes horrible. He's not eaten at all over the past 2 days either.

Is this just a virus going around do you think? And we just need to wait ?

Everything tasting horrible sounds like covid. If you’re struggling to wake him or if he hasn’t weed in 12 hours you must seek medical attention. That’s a very high temp for a 9 year old.

In fact I’m not normally one to seek medical attention but I would in your situation.

Sounds very very much like the current strain of Covid, we had it over Xmas.

I would ring 111 for advice and be very very persistent getting water into him. But likely he'll perk up soon.

DD did similar after Christmas. Possibly less sleeping but a 3yo sitting on the sofa all day with 3 naps isn't the norm.

I'd call 111 in your case tbh.

Thank you. I hadn't thought of Covid as I had assumed he would be sneezing or coughing, so thank you for suggesting it!

I felt like I had his temp vaguely under control as it's coming down with calpol. But the sleeping is worrying me. I will call 111.
