Does my baby have micrognathia?

Hi ladies,

A rather strange issue to discuss but my baby was born with a really small chin. My partner mentioned it to the health visitor at the time but she said he seemed perfectly healthy, lots of babies are born with small chin but they grow out of it within a few weeks or months. It just took a few days for him to start latching properly - but after that he didn't show any signs of breathing or feeding issues at all.

He is also growing extremely healthy so nothing suggests that there is a problem. But he is now 7 months old and I find that his chin hasn't grown much. He has a strong overbite with a tented upper lip, a really small chin and big cheeks that fall over it.

I think my baby is wonderful and I absolutely adore him, but my partner and I are wondering if there is a congenital issue here, as none of us recognise this trait from our families and don't really understand where it comes from? Has any of you come accross this issue and is there any way it can be fixed at this stage?

I post this here because I'm horribly ashamed to be looking at my child's traits in such a superficial way but I can't help feeling concerned about it!

Thank you all for your help and understanding.

Take your concern to the GP. Not the HV.

Please don't feel ashamed. It may be - almost certainly is- nothing but there's no harm in consulting your GP or dentist. I don't think any fix would be imminent though. A friend had her severe overbite fixed with dental headgear which brought her jaw forward as a teen but that's not a method suitable for a baby. She was also offered surgery as an alternative but again not til she was a teen.
