Baby on her third day of sleep?

endcityspawner · 26/12/2024 17:36

First time mum so forgive me if I’m being over dramatic!

Baby is 11 months old and on 23rd Dec was sick after her tea but we assumed food went down the wrong way as that’s how it sounded. 6am on Christmas Eve she woke up on her back bringing up bile I assume. She slept the whole of Christmas Eve, we didn’t see her for more than an hour and then all night again. Christmas Day was the same, she had to be woke and as soon as you do wake her she falls back to sleep. She’s difficult to wake and her eyes just roll back to sleep.

Last night (Christmas Day) she vomited again baring it mind it had been 38 hours since the last vomit and the time before that was 13 hours so I know it’s not noro etc.

After she was sick last night she went to bed and slept for 14 hours, again we had to wake her this morning. She drank 2oz of milk and fell asleep sat up and went back down for another 2.5 hours before we woke her for Calpol. She had Calpol, vomited and went back to sleep. She’s been asleep since. We can’t wake her, she opens her eyes for a split second before rolling them back to sleep.

She hasn’t eaten since the 23rd which I’m not overly concerned about because I know she won’t starve and will eat when she’s hungry. She also hasn’t had any milk bar the 2oz today which again, not overly concerned about as fluids is most important and she’s sipping water when we wake her for it.

I guess my main concern is the sleep? I know it’s a red flag when baby is difficult to wake and it’s not even as if she’s sleeping all day then up at night. She is literally sleeping all day and all night for now the third day straight. She’s been awake for no longer than an hour today.

Is it just a case of letting her keep sleeping and sleeping or does she need to be seen?

I’m reluctant that I’m just being an overly paranoid first time mum. Like I said food and milk isn’t my concern as she’ll eat when she’s ready it’s just the sleep.

Just wanted to say i was awake at an ungodly hour and I was really worried for you reading about your little girl. You're not being a paranoid FTM (or young mum) at all - I would also have been down to the hospital like a shot and uneasy about the first experience with the doctor.

You're doing everything right and sound like great parents. Fingers crossed your little one is on the mend soon!

Secretroses · 27/12/2024 07:11

My baby also had something similar, wouldn't stay awake, sickness but also was a funny colour. All obs were normal, temperature, heart rate etc and we were told she was fine by 2 different ambulance crews on 2 different days. But she wasn't fine... turns out it was a UTI which then turned into sepsis. Luckily the story had a happy ending.

moose62 · 27/12/2024 07:15

When my child had a virus she reacted in a similar way. The doctor at the hospital told us to let her drink full fat coke, in very small amounts. We did and she perked up really quickly. I guess you will try anything when they are ill.

oakleaffy · 27/12/2024 07:22

@endcityspawner Your little one in the pic you did definitely looks unwell, so hopefully just a non serious passing virus or infection that she is fighting off.
That red eyed, glassy look I remember from when my son was a baby when he was ill.

What a massive worry for you over Christmas.

Re your relative youth, don't worry about that, what a shame the wretched healthcare person bullied you into giving formula- they should have been reprimanded for that.

Hope your little one feels better soon.

Just had a google whilst we’re waiting for a different doctor and I don’t believe this is in place in NHS Wales unfortunately

Please bring her to Alder Hey, they will take you seriously

A relative had measles proper {Pre vaccines} as a child and they said the doctor who called daily advised Coca Cola and lots of chipped ice for her- which was normally only a birthday treat. 👍

Lavenderfarmcottage · 27/12/2024 07:28

You did the right thing and for your own sanity (literally) I think rest for everyone is needed. The Doctor sounds thorough and wouldn’t have suggested home option if he was worried.

I hope baby makes a turnaround fast xoxo

Well done getting her back. Hoping everything is picking up.

Is the Dr fully aware of what you described as the start of it - food going down the wrong way and then vomiting? Is there any possibility she had choked or inhaled food?

Absolutely this. With no symptoms of infection, this would be my main concern. I'd have been wanting a chest X ray for this reason.

BendingSpoons · 27/12/2024 07:50

I hope she recovers soon. My DS is a bit like this when ill. Last December both my kids had a virus with temperature and lethargy. A small bit of coughing but not much. DS just slept. We could wake him but he didn't want to be woken. We are used to it now but it was concerning at first. It does sound odd she is just sleeping and I think you are right to keep monitoring and questioning. I hope she recovers soon.

MargaretThursday · 27/12/2024 07:57

You are right to keep going back
But D's reacted like this to viruses when small. He'd just sleep. I remember one time when he was about 6yo getting his old buggy out to get him to the doctor because he couldn't stay awake. If he did wake then he'd crawl because he didn't have the energy to walk.

But even though I knew he was like that, it's still frightening to see and your DC doesn't ace a history of this.
If they don't wake properly then take them back again today.

Haveabreakkitkat · 27/12/2024 07:59

A bit different because my DD was only 2 weeks old but she was like this sleeping all the time difficult to wake, she did also cry like it pain when we touched her so maybe different. But 111 got us straight into OOH at the hospital and doc referred straight to resus with suspected sepsis. Turned out to be meningitis but I hope they have checked your DD for sepsis and meningitis, made me feel sick reading your post remembering it. I hope your DD is ok and the docs have ruled out anything nasty

marmia1234 · 27/12/2024 08:04

Did you say she vomited bile? That and the lethargy aren't great. I think you said you are in Wales . Do you have the "Doctor at home" system where they come to you after hours? Have you given her any medication?

muggart · 27/12/2024 08:08

When my newborn vomited bile we were told it's an indicator of sepsis and she was out on antibiotics immediately. Granted, my child was only a few hours old and fortunately the sepsis teat did come back negative.

Just saying this so you make sure to mention the bile when you talk to doctors.

jetSTAR · 27/12/2024 08:09

I think you are doing a great job as a mum! Best Wishes to your little one and hope she feels better soon x

Ivymom · 27/12/2024 08:18

When they checked blood sugar, did they also check for ketones? My DD has Type 1 diabetes and has been sick with large ketones, even with a normal blood sugar. She was lethargic, wanted to do nothing but sleep and vomited.

Memyselfmilly · 27/12/2024 08:29

Just wanted to say a massive well done op! I had a Covid baby and felt very ignored by any health care professional so I know that it can seem really daunting to advocate for your child as part of you feels well what is the point but you have and you’ve done brilliantly!

BookGoblin · 27/12/2024 08:33

Well done OP. Hopefully she perks up today and you all feel better soon.

mammaCh · 27/12/2024 08:54

You definitely did the right thing to take yer back and demand a second opinion.
We've had rubbish doctors before who literally cannot be arsed. Really had to kick up a huge fuss, then second Dr said first Dr had indeed missed something and hadn't followed the correct procedure

Well done for fighting for your baby.
I hope she's better today x

Pussycat22 · 27/12/2024 09:16

Hospital. NOW!!!

Onthetubetoday · 27/12/2024 09:16

OP you aren’t on here to keep mumsnet happy. I wouldn’t give a hoot if you feel you forgot to ask something. Please don’t feel pressurised to go to run back and forward to hospital based on what people on an internet forum say. I’m sure you’re exhausted and hope you get some rest.

Americano75 · 27/12/2024 09:27

I'm shattered reading this, God knows how you are! How is she now?

Lubilu02 · 27/12/2024 09:27

I have nothing productive to say other than I hope your little one is showing some signs of improvement now.
You sound like a fantastic Mum who is really on the ball and making sure she's getting all the essentials whilst she's ill.
You can never be too cautious with a baby, and you've done exactly the right thing taking her to hosptial when in doubt.
You can keep checking her temperature, buy your own oximeter to check heart rate and o2 (always reassures mine when my little ones are ill).
It's so worrying when they are ill, you just wish they were well causing havoc instead! X

XmasElfOnTheShelff · 27/12/2024 09:29

Bless you OP. I am not surprised you’re shattered.

my 1yo got an ear infection and just slept slept slept. However she was hot and had fast breathing / HR due to the temperature. She was always sick with infections, UTI, ear infection, all made her vomit.

I hope she’s better soon and well done for advocating. The second doctor sounds really thorough.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 27/12/2024 09:31

An A&E doctor once said to me that no good Health Care Professional is ever going to be annoyed with a parent concerned about their baby’s health.

I hope you little girl gets the attention and treatment she needs as soon as possible.,

TheyCantBurnUsAll · 27/12/2024 09:48

Do come back and update us when she's well op. I've been worried about her all night.

Different situation as my dd was older and had a fever but I took her to hospital once and was being fobbed off with the go home give 5ml fluids every 10 minutes. While waiting for one final person to tick a box to send us home we noticed a rash starting to show. It was meningitis and had that rash not shown I'd have been sent home without any tests done on her made to feel I was being silly. They went into full panic injecting antibiotics and monitoring her. She was seriously ill. What I will always remember was she was just as ill before the rash and was being fobbed off it was only when she got the text book rash they took it seriously. It looked like tiny red pin pricks I could hardly see it and could easily have missed it, I would never have thought twice about it had she not been floppy and lethargic
