My son finished a 3 day course of antibiotics on Sunday. Today was again given antibiotics for 7 days this time and cream for balantis too. However since earlier he's developed a fever that hit 40. He's had one dose of antibiotics. We were told if he keeps hitting over 39 after 24 hrs to go to a@e but if he goes downhill quicker what would you do? Call 111 for advice? Just feel so helpless

What do you mean down hill? If he can’t wee or seem lethargic then I would go straight to A and E.

Is the fever coning down with calpol?

We finally managed to get the fever down with neurophen. He's drunk alot of water overnight and is weeing. Sorry I wasn't clear I was very tired. Hoping we're on the up now

I would personally take him to A&E for assessment. Second best option is to read up on the signs of sepsis in children and go with your gut feeling.

We were messed around by our surgery when our son had a UTI (they seem to field calls for child patients - I've never managed to get a single appointment for either of our kids when they've been sick). I ended up having to call 111 and get an out of hours GPs appointment. By this point several hours had passed and his temperature had reached 40 degrees, which is a go direct to hospital. Paediatric team were waiting for us and it was a case of getting his temperature down or he would have to stay the night. In the meantime they ran tests and he had strep throat in addition to the UTI and was in quite a bad way, but as soon as we brought the temperature down he started to feel better. Not drowsy at any point but inconsolable for several hours. I would call 111 now.

Ah, just seen your update. Glad to see it's come down. It's horrible watching and waiting when there's nothing you can do.

Thanks everyone. He's still getting a temp but it's controllable with neurophen. He would have been in antibiotics for 24hrs tonight so if no improvement I'll call 111 just for some advice. Obviously if he's worse I'll take him to a@e.
